22 Nosler

Post by 6pt-sika »

It's no big secret I'm not an advocate of the 223/5.56 . But Nosler 's brought out a 22 cal for the AR-15 platform that interests me . https://www.22nosler.com/

I was looking yesterday and while brass and dies are not available for this Midway had Stoner Arms complete uppers for $499 with an 18" heavy stainless barrel . Checked them a few minutes ago and they have the same upper on sale for $449 so one is on the way to me now

So, a 6.8 spc necked down to 22 cal? Kind of like a 219 zipper improved then?

Mmmm......maybe if your looking for something new to play with.....223 is sooooo cheap to shoot and with the right loads and today's BDC scopes and shooting the 69 gr. Sierra MK.....with easily bust clay birds out to 500....from my half dozen AR's......even the shorty 11.5". But......it is nice to see companies innovating to keep out sport alive.----6

Nosler states a barrel life of around 4000 rounds, is that normal for AR's?

New case, but looks like a lengthened 6.8 spc with a rebated rim like the 284 win. Might have to think on this one. Was thinking of chambering a rifle to 223AI, but this might work better!! However, that cheap 223 brass has great appeal!!

If this thing shoots well enough to suit me with the Nosler 60 grain Partition and isn't heavy as a boat anchor I may just take steps to take it somewhere and do in a poor unsuspecting deer .

It is quite respectable on paper. Bet it would be a great pasture poodle rig too!
Latest gun mag, Rifle Shooter I think, has a couple ads and lists brass from Nosler but what really got my attention is Hornady has 218 Bee Brass for sale!

I'm shooting a 223AI out of a 21" Contender. A load of H335 gives me 3400fps with a55gr bullet. Haven't tried any other powders yet.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

At the link the 22 Nosler was compared to "5.56x45" of unknown bullet weight or barrel length used. Interesting.

Ballistics on Nosler site show a 55gr 22 Nosler doing 3350fps.

A 20" barrel AR with 55gr M193 will do 3250fps. That is milspec M16 standard performance.

The velocity they show for comparison labeled as "5.56x45" is in fact that of 62gr M855 from a 14.5" M4 barrel. They give no barrel length or bullet weight for the "5.56x45" on the chart.

An 18" barrel 22 Nosler will give an increase of 100fps over a 20" barrel 5.56 with the same weight bullet.

M193 from a 22" barrel does 3360fps.

Here a 26" .223 barrel is cut down in 1" increments. m193 reaches 3431fps.
http://rifleshooter.com/2014/04/223-rem ... nds-rifle/

A 24" .223 AI will push 77gr bullets to 3000fps, and 55gr to 3500fps and can also shoot .223 and 5.56.
