I go in tomorrow...

Post by Ysabel Kid »

... for my first external interviews in almost 30 years.

Start off with an "interview panel" of 6 people. I do a presentation on myself for a half hour, followed by a half hour of general questions. Then I am off to meet 1:1 or 2:1 with the same folks. It gets the background stuff out of the way so I don't need to repeat myself 4 different times.

As some here may recall, my employer of 29 years (next Wednesday is that anniversary) decided to eliminate my role at the beginning of November. Worse, they decided to kick me to the curb at the same time - along with hundreds of other people. Worst bloodbath I've seen since 1992. :(

Wish me luck. Better yet, if you can spare a prayer or two, please drop one for me!

Thanks!

Don't be 'arrogant', but on the other hand, have the attitude that you are expecting them to explain why you should bother to deal with them, instead of some other outfit. It will help you in the long run (either they will realize they need you, or if they don't come to that realization, you will move on, and find a better fit).

Could be worse... you could be like me and have a 17 y/o degree that has only served to crush your FICO as you wandered from sub-educated job to sub-educated job...

You've worked for one company for 29 years? I'm at 11 "jobs" since by BS in 2000..

And the job that I'm doing now, I really like... even though if I had gone into it 17 years ago - without a pointless degree - I would be in senior management and making 3x by now...

All things considered, I have always hired the first interviewee who made me feel as though I were the one being interviewed.

Be sure you explain twice, what you can bring to the table in the first two weeks. How you can make your hiring manager/director look good. Ask what metrics or performance goals that take up that person's time. Address those.

I like to ask the question: "What keeps you from doing this task group yourself, as an entrepreneur?"
- While I understand not everyone is an entrepreneur, I have grown to appreciate the fact some have given it some serious and critical thought. 8)

My position was eliminated less than a year ago. I'm 57. After 6 months of getting interviews, but no offers I was told I should get out of the industry I had been in my whole life. My previous industry is in a major contraction and there is a huge pool of talent (younger) to choose from, for the few positions available.

One month later I was hired in a different industry.

Stay positive and good luck.

I don't know what your skill set is but a company I used to work for is opening a new plant in Midland, NC. The company is Intertape Polymer Inc. They make film and paper tapes as well as Stretch wrap films. The new plant will be making water activated paper tape. It might be worth checking out.

Re: I go in tomorrow... (update at the end)

Post by Ysabel Kid »

Thank you fellas for your thoughts, prayers, and words of encouragement.

The interviews went quite well. I was very impressed with this company and the quality of the people I met with on Friday. I am not sure I would be a perfect fit for the role, as the product line is vastly different than anything I've worked with during the past 20 years. However, they are going to be making changes in their sales process and procedures that I am very familiar with. I should hear something this week one way or another. It was a good experience in any case, so I've got a positive outcome no matter what.

Thanks again! :D

Re: I go in tomorrow...

First, thank you all for your prayers. I know they have helped in this situation.

My current employer (of just over 29 years) has actually extended my separation date. Call it a stay of execution - for the time being. My role has been eliminated and I will be separated eventually, just not right away.

So I've decided to ride it out for a bit. I don't have the luxury of letting ego or emotion into my decision; I have a family to provide for. As much as I would love to tell them to "stick it!", continuing to work for them, accruing towards my pension and some bonus's, and staying with my medical insurance is the smart move (my back is flaring up again, putting a fine point on this last item). The delay in my separation date allows me to be extra choosey in looking for another employer and job; I can find something that not only fits me professionally, but can also handle the limitations I have with the back injury.

I liked the company and the people I interviewed with, and found out after I proactively turned down the role that I was there first choice. Hopefully I didn't burn a bridge (I don't think I did), and the experience, after being out "of the game" for almost 30 years, was good. Now I just need to play a masterful game of chess to get me across the finish line...

Thanks again!

That's good news.

I tried to run it out when my last employer eliminated my job. Severence was $1K for every year of service. That would of been $29K at the finish line. I didn't make it, my current job came up and I had to make the move. So no money from them to go away.

It was well worth it. I get bonuses now and make $20K more a year than my last job. Wow , 20K more a year on guns! I haven't seen that happen, wife spends it on the kids. I seem to still get my $20 a week allowance. Funny how that works.

He's doing good. Problem is now the inevitable; he is used to zero control when he is gone at school, and we still have basic rules when he is home. Yes, we are flexible (he is a young man), but he also has a younger sister at home, and we don't want to set an example. And yes, I have and always will a double-standard between the boy and the girl. Too much danger in the world to the latter. Reality stinks.

Funny, I still get my $20 a week allowance too. Hasn't changed in 30 years!!!
