I went on a diet yesterday.

It was the worst 24 hours of my life. I sure am glad that's over.

Since I retired back in June I found out how easy it is to put on weight. Although I have yet to progress to this, :D the solution is to stay busy and eat proper. I find it easier and more fun just to buy pants with a larger waist. ----6

Sixgun, eat less, drink more water, and buy ammo or components instead of pants. But it seems like the older I get the better food tastes!. Todd/3leg

I was down to 163 this summer, working hard in the garden and building a storage shed for the John Deere. I have since added back 10 pounds -- all in the middle.

Well, Funny thing this subject came up. It all turns out that I had a doctors appointment today at 11:00 am. I was telling the doc about the 15 pound weight gain since I retired only 6 months ago. He say to me, "Jack, 15 pounds is relatively easy to lose and as you told me that sex is no longer in your daily activities, why don't we have an appointment to have your sex organ reduced in size?' I said, "well doc, you right, lets just take off 1/4 of it." he says, "OK, that will bring your weight from 180 down to 115 and anymore you will be negative in weight." I tell him," Yea, the guys on Leverguns all tell me I'm all "dick" so lets stay with the 25% reduction.----6

Bright side at least it didn't say " Get off you are killing me!". Last doctor's appointment I told the Nurse it would say tilt and she said we could skip it.

1 January 2017 will be two years into my weight loss efforts. I achieved pretty much everything the first year, and have maintained it now a year. I would call it a "diet" only so much that a diet describes what you eat. Some may call it a "plan" or a "lifestyle" or some other silly scrat. I've just changed what I eat a bit, and the level of exercise, and the combination (though much more the former; the exercise is to help with my back issues - but that is also why I lost the weight to begin with) worked - far above my expectations. I dropped 63 pounds and stabilized at that point (though I must admit I've allowed myself a 2 pound "grace" for the holidays). I started with almost no carbs, then transitioned to low carb/natural carbs - so no processed sugars or grains. I've never counted a calorie or worried about meal portions. It helps if you like meat and cheese (which I do). As the weight came off, I started walking on the treadmill again, and doing the physical therapy exercises to help my back. I don't think these helped cut the weight, but the exercises did strengthen my core which helps my back - a lot.

My family got me a smart watch last Christmas, and the big thing I use it for is the step counter. The average for a man my age (52) is 6,000 steps a day. Doctor's recommend you get at least 10,000 steps in every day. My average now is about 18,000 steps a day. Best week ever was almost 22,000 steps a day (average) and my best day ever was 32,000 steps! It is a low-impact way to stay limber.

I can't recommend this approach enough. After I lost my weight I finally got around to reading a book a friend had loaned me called "The Smarter Science of Slim". It is available on Amazon. It is a very easier read, and well researched. The only change I made after it (as it reinforced what I was already doing) was to increase my protein intake by mixing in whey protein powder in my morning shake.

If I can do this, anyone can. My last bout with the pinched nerve/herniated disc/sciatica had me flat on my back for a month in unrelenting pain. I had to do something. The back pain is still there and always will be, but it is much more manageable. Dropping over a quarter of my weight is what has been keeping me going.

Now, if my wife would only stop baking Christmas treats!!!

As long as we don't beep when we back up everything is fine! On the serious side have been working on keeping off the weight since retirement.Never ending job but the alternative is worse and a lot of stuff that gets sold in the stores shouldn't be.

Kid, thanks for the inspiring post. I need to resume my core exercises as my lower back is a total mess. I am looking at radio frequency nerve ablation to relieve pinching caused by lumbar arthritis -- and surgery at L5 to relieve compression on the nerves that run my legs. Add muscles in spasm and you get the grim picture. I'd get on our treadmill, but when my right leg goes numb I start dropping my foot and would likely be ejected from the machine -- and maybe out the window ....

Good luck Bill. Foot drop is a scary thing. Those who have had it know. I hate it when my body simply stops doing what my mind tells it to do. My herniated disc is the L5/S1. I literally feel your pain. Start slow. Stay slow. Do what is comfortable. That is the best approach.

I just read about a guy who dropped 300 lbs. He was at 510 and got down to 210 in 15 months.
A gal I just read about dropped 195 lbs.

Those kinds of folks have my complete admiration, to arrive at that decision point to actually Start: then they Start, and then they find the mental toughness every minute of every day to not quit until a goal is reached, and perhaps even surpassed.
