my Thanksgiving science project: a new target design

Post by new pig hunter »

THANKSGIVING 2016

At the range, white target paper with black circles just doesn't work well for me because I can't easily see the bullet holes. A few years ago I started using the Shoot-N-C type of targets, which work great.

So, last week I was wandering around the local 99-Cent Store and saw some large & thick "neon" florescent poster paper and decided to experiment with a new target design. I bought one orange piece and one green piece. Each is 28" by 22". My thinking was that "neon" would (hopefully) provide a much better contrast to more easily see the bullet holes at long distance.

I used the orange sheet as the background. I cut five 1"-wide, 28"-long pieces from the green and used them to create a grid on the orange piece. I used a glue stick to fasten the green pieces. This grid system creates six 1"-square bullseyes.

Testing was accomplished a few days ago.
-- I set the target at 100 yards and am quite happy with the results. I use a 20X spotting scope and had no problem finding the holes of these calibers: .44 and .30 and .22. The contrast between dark hole and "neon" background really helps.

Here is a picture ........

Cool idea and good for you!

Years ago when I was accurizing a scoped Model 70 featherweight in .308, I did something similar to better define my aiming points.

I either made or bought targets with visible vertical and horizontal lines that crossed and looked much like the vertical and horizontal scope crosshairs. Done properly, this showed any deviation from "dead-on" including canting of the rifle.

Placing the scope crosshairs on the intersection of the lines on the target provided the accuracy to exactly and repeatedly aim and at the intersection on the target. This reduced aiming errors and 5 shot group size significantly.

This is a target for scopes that I made in Microsoft Word. It contrasts well enough to see the bullet holes easily through a spotting scope at 100 yards.

I/we hit upon your idea years ago but slightly different.
Buddy of mine would use a cross, either magic marker or just black tape. This system worked very well for iron sights. Just center up the sights on the cross and shoot.
For scoped guns I use red rosin paper, 3'x 150', cut to any size you like. I don't worry about grid, just put a 1" black square with a marker and proceed. I find that bullet holes are very easily seen at 100 with just the scope. Of course small dia rounds are a bit harder to see but 20x spotting scope solves that!

You get A LOT of targets from a roll plus it's big enough that multiple spots can be put on when load testing. No need for target changes!

Wow, I like that red rosin paper idea. I'm going to experiment with that too.

Great idea with green tape should be fast to make and handy.
Thanks for the idea.

You can make your own shoot and see type targets. Read about it some years ago and checked out the site but never bothered to make them. A google search should get you there though.

A word processor does a good job. I've made several using more 'lines' than 'spots', with for instance a set of lines that are fairly light on 1" for a background grid, then using a light grey shading for whatever aiming point I wanted.

One used heavier diagonal lines that got thin in the center, like a 'duplex' scope reticle turned 45 degrees - the regular 'duplex' version was actually harder to aim at with a scope - the 'almost' synchronized lines were distracting.

Here's one of them. I used black and grey so it would be cheaply reproducible on a photocopier.

I used the same line-weight for the outer boundary of the center nine squares as for the outside boundary, but it doesn't show well in the screen-shot above.

Hmm, I've got several rolls of blue painter's masking tape. That should work.

Thanks for the idea.

Ok, that will work....but you want to make it even easier to see? Make your own Shoot-n-See targets...........cheap.....ANY size you want.

Get cardboard and cut the size you want.

Tape clean white paper on one side or if you have any bright cardboard, forget the paper.

Stretch Saran Wrap tight over the side you taped the white paper to and tape from behind.

Spray paint the Saran Wrap side with flat black paint.

Let dry and shoot.------6

Rosin paper! Just what I wanted, and thank you for that gunny mack!

I went to Amazon and bought some two inch black dots. I think this'll work well for me.

JULY 2017 UPDATE

Way up at the top is the picture of my original target design, it had 2 verticals and 6 aim points.

Recently I needed an arts & crafts project, so I decided to redesign the target to incorporate 3 verticals which provides 9 aim points, and add crosshatching to create a 1" grid. The crosshatching is done with a yardstick and pen.
