Does Anyone Hunt With Lever Guns Anymore?

Post by Shrapnel »

I still can't get as many levers out each fall to shoot as I would like, but this year was not bad. An antelope with a Sako Finnwolf 308 and a deer with a 95 in 40-72...

eventually i will get to be here about 1/2 of the time but still got to work a lot now

this is the first time in many many years that i got two weeks off in a row.... been hunting on a friends place off pennwell bridge road, but the deer are smart and staying on the side of the road that has been made a shotgun/bow/muzzleloader area only! last year they were on the 'rifle side' but must have wised up

i hve a home in spirit hills off spring hill road, about 4 miles from pennwell bridge road......wish i could get down here more.....this is wonderful country, as you well know.

Took my 1886 Winchester in 45-90 out last Sunday and shot a big doe that I did not find until Tuesday. Double lung shot right where I wanted it with a 300 grain gas checked bullet over 34 grains of AA5744. It was by the very last light but it was a cold night and No. 2 son and I hunted hard for her the next day, just not far enough as she ran over a quarter mile before piling up. I hate it when that happens. Coyotes fed well though. Maybe I should use the BLR in 308.

For a few years now I've brought levers when I go deer or coyote hunting. I was up to camp last week deer hunting, brought my Marlin 336 35/30-30 and my backup a scoped Savage 99F 358 Winchester. It was pretty warm that week didn't see anything but this week is a different story. Much colder temps and the mountains are calling for snow for next few days. I'm tempted to go up later tonight or early tomorrow morning since this Saturday is the last day.

.

I've long hunter deer in Maine with leverguns (since 1967) - this year I used a ca.1914 .303 Savage Model 1899 instead of my ca.1978 .30-30 Winchester 94 Trapper.

For small game here, I've also used a levergun too - a .22LR Henry, a Marlin 39a, or a .22WMR Winchester 9422M-XTR, as the mood strikes me.

I've never owned or used a lever-action shotgun, though..........

Shot most of my deer with leverguns of all shapes and sizes. Couple with bolts.
Shamefully, this year I'm using an AR in 300BO.
Also embarrassed to say it's the first time I've hunted with ammo I didnt load myself. Probably why I ain't seen squat.

There......I confessed.

OldWin..... You need therapy! :D If you would of brought the 300BO to my camp....... it wouldn't be pretty, just kidding! :) You know honestly I've been seeing the AR's more and more up were I hunt each year. I'm guessing it's here to stay, I'm slowly getting used to it.

If I remember correctly MH, we just hunt across the river from each other.
After a month of use, I have to say it's pretty slick to carry. That said, it shoulders and points like garbage compared to a 92 or 94 carbine. I get a little more versatility with sighting options though.

Most of my lever guns are single shot Marlin Ballard lever guns. But I hunt every fall with one of them, regardless. Nothing better than stopping to take a break and having a fine old gun across your lap to admire! Well maybe taking game with that same gun is better! But I consider that the icing on the cake!

You are right about that MM93! I've probably missed deer while I sat staring at my old 94 38-55 SRC or 73 38wcf SRC.

Don't know what I was thinking this year.

jnyork,

Can you tell me why that moose has what very much look like deer antlers? I'm a city boy if you can't tell. :) There's one just like it mounted here in town but no one could tell me about the antlers.

Thanks.

These are the levers that I have used for hunting. The last time I hunted with a bolt gun was 1977. Levers only since then.

308 BLR - Deer and elk over 30 years. This is my kill gun.

Not much we can hunt with a rifle here in Illinois, would if I could. Did hit a crow once with my Browning 1886 SRC, a few feathers floated to the ground. Lots of starlings and a few groundhogs with 9422 or 30-30.

I killed this one yesterday with my Browning BLR .308
I shot a hog with it, a few weeks ago, also. I wanted to kill a hog with my Mod 71 Win but it just didn't work out.
I have had the BLR for about 27 years now. I have a lot of other leveractions, and other guns, but the BLR has been my bread and butter gun for a long time, because I have just never found a more effective gun of any kind for most hunting conditions that I encounter. I absolutely couldn't tell you how many deer and coyotes, and a little of everything else I have taken with it over the years.

Before I got the BLR, I mostly hunted with a Remington 700 BDL in .270 for the previous 20yrs, but after getting the BLR, I retired the old Remington 700 bolt gun. I have experimented with a lot of other rifles but I always come back to the BLR, because I have found that I it's almost as accurate as my best bolt gun, and the handling characteristics on the BLR (for me anyway) are really second to none, as far as scope guns go.

Well,
I don't hunt anymore, but when I did, it was with a levergun almost exclusively

either my dad's 'ol 94AE 30/30, or mostly my Guide Gun with a decidedly un-fancy Tasco 3-9x40 optic zeroed in with FTX 325gr bullets

#2 is my Mdl 59 Mosin Nagant.

#3 is a 16ga Drilling.

I hunt with my levers. I shoot with ... stuff.
