**** Levergunner Postal Match Poll ****

Post by Griff »

Question for the "peanut gallery". t.r. and Merle have voiced legitimate concerns with the subject match. I wonder if being more inclusive (oh what a politically correct term...), would have more participation, by MORE participants?

So, by extension, here's a list of possible categories to add to the levergun match...

.22s

Rifle calibers

Scopes

Add your suggestion here:

I'll give this a couple of weeks, and after the middle of the month, do a poll to run for a month, and the new, revised, or the same ol' same ol', match will begin in January, 2017! Any complaints... take a number!

I think defining categories would help to:
  • a) allow more folks to participate with their favorite shootin' iron, and

    b) define categories so several different types of leverguns would be able to win.
Maybe divide entries up as:
  • Rimfire @ 50 yards,
Pistol caliber @ 100 yards (might just list 'em for clarity  ), and
Rifle caliber @ 100 yards (might just list 'em for clarity  )
...and within each category scopes and irons separate.
That would be 6 categories.

The key is that if a person feels like their firearm is handicapped by however it is set up, not to get bent out of shape....not enough prize money at stake here to fuss about...

Maybe 50 yards off-hand for irons and 100 yards off a rest for scopes ones....?

That way the shooter is the weak link at 50 yards and the 100 yards with scope is more accuracy-testing the gun itself...?

I'm good with the way it was, or whatever way youse guys decide. We had so much rain here in Idaho panhandle that what little sunny days I had to use up doing honey do's. Will try harder to make November a postal match month for sure. Sorry Oct. Got away from me..

I've been involved with firearms competition my entire adult life (40+years) and one thing I have learned......once the rules are made, everyone wants to change them to suit their own personal preferences....you know......they want the "edge", whether it's the ammo used, firearms used, distance, whatever.

I personally thought Griff's list of rules was already pretty much straight forward. He kept the rules simple with one style of firearm and one style of target and one distance. Your either "in" or your "not".

As for making it more interesting to gather more participants, the only thing I can see adding is maybe .22 rimfires....but still....keep the rules as they were.....once a game gets "slopped" up, it's no longer interesting.

It's why this country is so messed up....every ethnic or speciality group want things "their way"-------------------6

Perhaps a distinction between tube fed (or single shot) and later "modern" levers such as the Browning BLR or the Winchester M88 family? :?

As initiator of the original competition my preference is to keep it as it is instead of heading off on endless tangents. See the rules.

Not endless tangents, but limited tangents based on interest from potential shooters.
Offering a reasonable number of options to bring in more shooters should be weighed against limiting entries.

I guess I don't see how adding non-pistol calibers would hurt. It's still leverguns only. :?

Griff with hunting season and a course to earn my Black Badge I completely forgot the postal match. If you hold one I will endeavor to enter in Jan. I am shooting a Rossi open sights in 45 Colt.

The only thing I would change is the cartridges allowed.

1. Any open sighted rifle, any cartridge
2. 50 yds./meters
3. 10 shot groups
4. Same color target for everyone, black
5. All offhand

I think the match should be kept as they set it up. Start different matches and run it the way you want to.
