Got a big Canada moose in BC last week

Post by daisygordoninc »

Got a big Canada moose last week in the Caribou District of BC, east of 100 Mile House. Have been hunting for 3 years there, our guide and outfitter is Chris Condie, Windy Mountain Outfitters. Of course my gun was a "lever gun", a Marlin 338 Express, 200 gr. bullet, 2740 fps. The shot was 270 yards, pretty flat, wide open as he and a cow were standing together in the sun.
One shot down, didn't get up, a little low but went through heart and lungs, no meat damage at all. I think the shot was "blessed", it was further than I am comfortable shooting, I'm not a great shooter, especially at that range. He weighed in hanging in the locker at 844 lbs. I had lots of meat to give away when I got home.

I'm curious as I'm sure others are too, how did you get the meat home safely?

My Son has had his Moose(s) processed in Canada (he went up there for 5 years in a row), by his Native Canadian Indian guides, who then flash-froze the meat packages before he packed the meat in coolers with (dry ?) ice for the drive home.

I love that area. I used to go east of 100 mile house camping and fishing every year.
many great memories of my visits.

For some reason I can't open the attachment, but congratulations nonetheless. I'd rather harvest a decent moose than go back to Africa, if I could do but one.

How wide was the rack and what does it weigh?
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

250 Savage... its what the 223 wishes it could be...!

Glad you were able to connect on a moose. I never ate any, so can't comment on tastyness. The photo is so small I can't tell how big the rack is but you gathered a bunch of meat with one shot.

Sorry about that pic, I just can't seem to get my pics to "like" the sight. The rack was 44 1/2 inches, quite even, very
heavy, officially a 10 point as one or two didn't count. Pretty nice for a lower Canada moose.

NICE! Meat in the freezer. The 338MX is one of my favorites for whitetail. Nice to know it performs on Moose.
