I always thought that Cabelas was much larger than the other. Well, I don't know these things very well. We have two Cabelas within 50 miles of where I live and after a couple of visits, I just don't feel the need to go back to them. -----6

I like Cabela's much more than Bass Pro. Wonder if they will keep the Cabela's store similar to what it is now or change it?

Yup, it was.

And I like Cabelas better too. I do a fair amount of business with them. If you time it up with their sales and free shipping offers, it isn't worth going to the store.
We have one way down in Portland. I make it down about once a year.

I like Cabelas because I have a Cablea's Visa card and they have always treated me great. I've only been in a Cablea's store about 3 times. I find that the quality of the products in Bass pro is inferior to Cabela's.

Ditto

Been in a BP once and didn't like it. Of course, I'm closest to the "original" Cabelas in NE so there might be a difference. Also have the card and it has been worth it. When I need to talk to someone about the card, I call NE with NE folks on the other end and things happen fast. Last year got a $450+ parka for zip including shipping. Fox says that the card will be honored "through" the merger, it doesn't say after. Capitol one can bite me....I burned their flippin card. Looks like I better cash in my chips and move on.

Double Ditto

That Cabela's Visa was the best, hands down, of any card ever.
Most of Cabela's stuff was too expensive, especially the wearing apparel, boots and such. But with my points it was handy for picking up a box of this, or a bit of that at a good price. I really enjoyed their gun library, overpriced, but lots of cool stuff.

Part of the purchase means the Cabelas card will be Capital One now, and not Visa.
I have no BP around me, and Cabelas is 16 miles away. I don't care who bought who, as I am not a Cabelas fan for gun purchases. I'm too old and can't lose that many hours sitting at the check out waiting for them to process my purchase.

two weeks ago my son and I made a trip north to Tacoma, Wa. Bass Pro Shop.
was not impressed as my fishing days are behind me. We stopped at Cabelas
on our way home and we both agreed that we preferred the Cabelas store. I
have visited Cabelas stores in 5 states. Both Nebraska stores were awesome.

I go to both of those...the Lacy Cabela's is far superior.

I've been to a small handful of those great Cabela's "superstores" --- one in Omaha, NE, Ft Worth TX, --- Gonzales LA is not bad

OTOH, my local Oklahoma City Cabela's is a yawner in comparison to some of their other stores

I know some things are overpriced, but I've gotten reasonable deals in the Gun Library on a couple of occasions , including a nice Model 50 Winchester scatter gun for around 250 bucks, and a Ruger #1 in 45/70 for $800 or so. Granted that's likely just FMV, but you can occasionally see a gun or two there that doesn't show up very often, --- so you have to ask --

"do I wait another 4 years until a cheaper one comes along?" --- or just tell 'em to grab the 4473 and let the big dog eat

Us Old Pharts are in constant sticker shock. My 15 year old Makita cordless drill went tits up, and instead of the 69 bucks I paid the first time you can't get into one for three times that these days.....I found a reasonably priced Bostitch with the proper features for about 85.... I hope it holds up.

More News from Fox Business below.

Sounds good "so far"...

Bass Pro Plans to Keep Cabela's Front and Center

Bass Pro Shops won’t complete its $5.5 billion acquisition of Cabela’s (CAB) until 2017, but one thing already seems clear: the hunting and firearms retailer isn’t going anywhere.

Sidney, Nebraska-based Cabela’s, known for its megastores featuring outdoor gear and wildlife displays, has been on the block for nearly a year, and Bass Pro Shops was long rumored to be interested in a combination with its main rival. While some details have yet to be revealed, Bass Pro Shops indicated that it will continue to coexist with Cabela’s under the same roof.

“We look forward to continuing to celebrate and grow the Cabela’s brand alongside Bass Pro Shops and White River [Marine Group] as one unified outdoor family,” Bass Pro Shops founder and CEO Johnny Morris said in a statement.

Also, in a series of questions and answers posted on its website, Bass Pro Shops said “it is business as usual at Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s and there will be no immediate impact to our stores.”

“Following the closing of the transaction, we intend to celebrate and grow the Cabela’s brand, and will foster qualities that respective customers love most about both Bass Pro and Cabela’s,” the Springfield, Missouri-based company added.

Bass Pro Shops expects to keep Cabela’s offices in Sidney and Lincoln, Nebraska.

The privately owned Bass Pro Shops runs 99 stores and employs about 20,000 people, according to Monday’s announcement. Cabela’s has 19,000 employees and 85 stores located in the U.S. and Canada.

Like Bass Pro Shops, Cabela’s is a popular brand among outdoor enthusiasts and attracts fiercely loyal customers. However, it has struggled in the face of growing competition from smaller stores and other brick-and-mortar chains like Gander Mountain.

Sales at Cabela’s locations open at least a year were down 1.3% during the first half of 2016. The number of purchases also fell during the same period. Elliott Management, the activist shareholder that has pushed changes at Hess (HES) and other companies, urged the company to seek a buyer about 10 months ago.

Morris has had his sights on Cabela’s “for many years,” he wrote in an open letter. He believes that combining Cabela’s hunting expertise with Bass Pro’s fishing gear and White River boats will create the top retailer in the $50 billion outdoor sporting goods industry.

“I have enormous admiration for Cabela’s and the remarkable brand and business they have built. Cabela’s is a great American success story,” Morris said.

Bass Pro and Cabela’s had humble beginnings.

Founded in 1961, Cabela’s got its start when Dick, Mary and Jim Cabela placed their first ad to sell fishing flies through the mail. The founders eventually created a catalog full of fishing gear. Today, the catalog business still accounts for about a quarter of total sales.

Dick Cabela passed away in 2014 at the age of 77. His brother, Jim, is the current chairman of Cabela’s.

Morris created Bass Pro Shops in 1972, taking up just eight square feet of space in the back of his father’s liquor store.

As part of the buyout, Bass Pro Shops is taking over Cabela’s credit card business in a partnership with Capital One (COF). Loyalty programs at both retailers will remain in place. Bass Pro Shops will honor customer rewards under the Cabela’s CLUB program.

Morris also noted that Bass Pro Shops and Cabela’s will be able to combine their conservation efforts, adding that wildlife conservation “is at the heart and soul of Bass Pro Shops.”

Shoot, Six, if we all had your contacts at Targetmasters, none of us would go! Actually, you're lucky everyone isn't coming to your place instead of Cabelas.

Bass Pro is at least 20% higher cost on everything around here. I like Cabela's and bought items like pants, shorts and tennis shoes there. Bass Pro has expensive lower quality items and much less selection. Needless to say, Fin, fur and feather will get all my money now.

I'm surprised that Gander Mountain is considered a competitor to Cabelas. While both companies sell similar products, Cabelas offers far more and better selections of pretty much everything - and Cabelas has way better service in the stores ( on the floor ) and on their website.

There has been a Gander Mountain here in the Eau Claire, WI Area for quite some time. They bring in a new store manager about every 1-1.5 years. A buddy was a part time salesman ( evenings and some weekends ) for years and we taught 1-2 Hunter Safety courses every year in the store. Never so much as a "thank you". They remodeled the store and removed the classroom, so we moved on to another group of instructors, which was fine as we were leaving anyway.

Gander is very Ho Hum...
