problem with Glenfield 30-30

Post by JNG »

I started this post a bit ago, then my Brother had a stroke. Now he has past away.
Back to the 30-30. After fooling with, it I found the loading gate was causing the problem. If I pull down the gate a tic with my finger I can close the action.
A possible fix with not going to a smith?

Thanks Joe,

Sorry to hear about your brother. Can you check the screw holding the loading gate/spring cover? Maybe if loose it could cause those symptoms.
This is plagiarized from someone else, but I love it!

I was born a gun owner.
It wasn't a choice.
I didn't become one later in life.
I was born this way.

.

Please accept our condolences on the loss of your brother.......

If the loading gate screw, just to the rear of the gate opening, isn't loose, be aware that the loading gate itself is a spring (the loading gate's parts name is "gate spring"), and can lose it's tension.

I've simply replaced the gate with one I bought from Numrich Arms (about $21) - http://www.gunpartscorp.com/Products/419100B.htm

It is possible that the loading gate spring has weakened -- as noted, an easy and fairly cheap fix --, but it's about 10 times more likely that the loading gate screw has gotten a bit loose.

I've seen the loading gate also be simply misaligned. Sometimes simply loosening the gate screw, and centering the gate, then tightening the screw will fix it.
