Vienna Sausages

Post by Bill in Oregon »

I last had these on a rainy Scout campout near Mount Rainier about 50 years ago, and always scratch my head when I see them on sale.
Got a huge kick out of this fella's very serious review. The Texas pronunciation, the plastic fork and the dog test make this an absolute classic in my book.

Yea, so does Spam. If people knew what went in those things they would gag. :D

For real, my FIL, who has since passed over the Great Divide was a farmer/butcher and was once invited to take a tour of the east coast famous H. scrapple plant. (Can't say it in public) He told the family one day what he saw going in those huge vats .........well, you get the picture....intestines, livers with big pus bags on them.....(he had an eye for these things)........organs of any sort.....gristle.......and probably remnants of what Philly cops scraped off the street after a 100 degree Saturday night of the darkies fighting over women and drugs. :D I vowed. (In the late seventies) I would never eat scrapple again ..........but I still do. :D -----6

Sitting out in the loggin' woods, it's lunchtime.

Can of vienna sausages, saltine crackers, can of pork 'n beans.

It's cold but being hungry makes up for it.

There's some memories.

I;ve had veenie sausages for a special treat since I was just a kid. My Grandma used to get them for me when I stayed overnight.
It sure brings back memories. My Grandma has been gone for fifty years but I can still hear her voice calling me in for lunch. :)

In line with what Six said. My Dad took a load of cattle down to a stockyard that I think he said was in New Jersey. He was waiting to get his truck weight after unloading and noticed a pen of cows that were real sickly with mucus running out of there noses and so weak they leaned on the fences and each other. He said are the dog food? The buyer said oh no they make bologna grade. He lived 55 years after that and never ate bologna or hotdogs again!! Said the image was burned in.

Actually vi-eeenie sausages and spam ain't really bad for their contents. Friend of mine worked for a short time at Farmer John in L.A., while I was hauling beef, and the Federal inspectors made regular, unannounced inspections. Having worked around food production for a while, I've seen a lot, but if most folks really knew what was in their food, they wouldn't eat any processed food. Ever eat a Micky D's or Carl Jr's hamburger? You might be getting "measles beef" or old dairy stock. Did you know that butter has a limit of rat sh** (feces), insect pieces, and trash the government allows? Jes eat it and don't think about it...

Ummmm, Spam!

I use vi-eeenys whenever I get a new pup--they seem to like 'em.

My cousin, who once worked in a pickle factory, told me, "NEVER EAT PICKLE RELISH--THEY SWEEP IT UP OFF THE FLOORS". I admit that I do like relish to this day though.

Vienna sausages are a part of my young life....most Sundays before.church the four.kids would come out to the kitchen to coffee, Orange juice, Vienna sausages, cheese cubes, and crackers. Mmmmh. Now my Dad was a spam guy but he cubed it and fried it then mixed it into Mac and cheese with a big squeeze of mustard.mmmmh. Tom

We use a can of Spam for a quick meal. Fry up a skillet of hash browns and onions and a can of Spam diced up. Then whip up about 4or5 eggs and add to the pan, stir until the eggs cook up. Serve with hot flour or corn tortillas and salsa.

My dad was born in 1904, and growing up I remember him really liking Vienna sausages! He always took them along on camping or fishing trips, and we would take a break from hiking or fishing, and share a can or two with my brothers and I. I still enjoy them occasionally as a snack, and can't help but be reminded of my dad whenever I eat them. My wife and kids think there's something wrong with my taste buds to eat them, but that's OK. They don't have to like them, or even understand why I like them.

If that is the case, there is a good probability that you will not break down certain medicines. Be careful if a Doctor tries to put you on a statin drug. One symptom of not having the lives enzymes to break down and clear from your body certain drugs is a headache from preservatives.

I have always enjoyed eating them, especially when out hunting. They are a great snack to have in a duck blind where the dog is more than willing to share the goodies. But my brother-in-law and I don't call them Vienna Sausages; we refer to them by the main ingredient listed on the can's label- "mechanically separated chicken".

I love both Spam and sausages. I keep a couple of cans of sausages under the seat of the boat just in case. Had them all my life, camping or whatever. Rather just avoid knowing what is in them. Ignorance is bliss I suppose.

You guys are a bunch of weanies! Vienna Sausages and Spam are some of the best tasting meat that ever walked on four legs - and in their case - a dozen legs.

I will take a snack of Vienna Sausages any chance I can sneak them past the wife. And there is nothing better than two eggs over medium (covered in black pepper) nestled up against a "he man" slice of fried Spam. Throw in a couple warm biscuits and homemade potato cakes with some hot black coffee to wash it down and I you've got yourself a breakfast fit for a king. This stuff is tasty.

About the only thing that comes close to Spam for breakfast is, perhaps, a big slice of "Indian Round Steak" (bologna) fried to perfection, with some grits and a brace of over easy eggs. Now that's eating!

Oh, and speaking about health: If you eat a donut a day for the rest of your life you will eventually die. That's my health tip of the day. :D

I've been eating Vieena sausages for a long time and still wouldn't turn them down. I remember years ago when I was driving a grocery truck. I got to a store early, before the crew got in so they told me to wait a bit. I went into the store and saw that they had an endcap display of the "NEW" chicken vienia sausages. Initial price of $.10 a can. I bought 3 cans and a box of saltines and went out back to wait for the crew. When I opened the can the smell wasn't at all what I was expecting, the taste was even worse. As I was sitting in the truck I saw an old stray dog sniffing through the garbage. I called him over and tossed the little guy a few of the new chicken sausages to him. He sniffed them a few times and went on to eating the garbage. I figured the dog might have more insight than I did so I tossed the unopened cans into the dumpster. I think I came out ahead.

Growing up I ate a lot of fried baloney sandwiches, (prolly Bar-S as that was the least expensive that I remember). On a trip from Brookings OR, to Medford OR., I found restaurant in Cave Junction that had Fried Baloney Sandwiches on the menu. I had to try one. It had 2 slices of baloney ,each nearly 1/2" thick (yep, fried with black, crispy pieces at the edge of the slices), a big slice of fresh tomato (I don't think the cook could slice anything under 1/2" thick. Mebbe still drunk from last night?), a thin slice of onion and of course American Cheese, on white bread. It came with an order of huge, greasy fries and I had a mug of coffee. I was in Heaven! (but I won't mention the heartburn I later experienced)...

I eat both, but my cardio doc don't think its a good idea so not as often as I once did. My father would not touch Spam. Not that he had anything against it, just that he was in the Army Air Corp from 39 until 46 and felt he had ate enough to last a life time. Vienies on the other hand. A can of them, a few jalapenos, some sharp cheddar, and a pack of crackers was a meal for a king( at least around hunting or fishing camp). When I first saw the Jalapeno Vienies my first thought was of my father, he would have loved them.
