Need a new lap top

Post by hondo1892 »

My lap top is about dead. It keeps going blank and I have to take the battery out to reboot. I'm not a gamer so I just need one for email and checking out places like this. Do you guys have any that you really like? This one is an HP and has been a good computer but is like me and getting older. So I need to replace it before long. I'll have to check to see if any sales are going on this weekend.

I've been plenty happy with the Dell's I've had. Not all that expensive. Windows I understand sort of.

Now I'm trying a Mac, and the device itself is nicely made, but of course pricey. I tried it because everyone kept saying how they were better, but they don't interface well with my printers (Epsons) and not with my phone at all (Samsung). Evidently everything they touch has to be an Apple product or they lock up.

So next computer for me will be back to an inglorious Dell.

+1 for the Chromebook. If you don't need a lot of computer power a Chromebook will do most everything you need to do. It's also more secure and more stable. It uses the Chrome OS which is a version of Android/Linux.

I have bought the last Microsoft based machine, an HP laptop with Windows 10.
My other devices are all Apple, Smartphone & IPad. They Work and never give trouble. Not so with the HP and Windows 10.
I have many times threatened to throw the thing in the closest Phoenix Canal.

Pay the price, and go Apple.

A very intersting discussion.

This is an old Toshiba laptop brought back to life with a 150G drive and an extra 20G of RAM from a dead HP.

I'm running XP.

The newer Toshiba runs Win 8.?.

My demands are not great, the machines just have to work.

.

I'm into 6mos with my 2nd HP laptop ($298 @ WallyWorld Nov 2015), as the first HP I bought ($200 @ WallyWorld in 2007) lasted only 8 years..........

It took a day or so for me to get familiar with the Windows 10 that came with the new HP, and I'm as satisfied with it as I was with my older unit.

I know almost nothing about computers, so when I needed a new laptop I went over to Best Buy and looked at name brand laptops, and just got the cheapest name brand on sale. I think I paid about $300-$350 for my HP, and it's been a great laptop.

My present and two before that have all been Toshiba .
I've also had a Dell that wasn't bad , but my PC's are all pretty much for pleasure so as far as work related is concerned I have no idea .

This old Toshiba, 8 years, is running Windows XP. When it dies, it will be replaced, but not before then.

Screw those laptops...get an idiot proof Apple I-Pad. I have three desktop computers laying in the corner of the basement....nothing but aggravation for a computer challenged half Italian 40 IQ retart like myself.

Since I got this I-Pad.......3 years ago......it's been 99.99% trouble free...takes great pictures......can take it anywhere in the house or within close proximity outside of the house or you can get the one that you can take anywhere....like $10 a month extra on your cell phone bill.

What's a cell phone? Still don't have one of those yet either.------6

"For me" a laptop is far easier to maneuver than a tablet .

Now granted I do always have my I Phone with me and it's pretty much a baby tab .

But if I wanna do any actual work (or as close to it as I get) the laptop is far easier for me .

I made the switch to an iMac a couple months ago and will never go back to Windows. Expensive but so far worth it. Look for a used older model.

Looks like I'll be doing some shopping this weekend. My daughter has an apple that has been refurbished and I don't care for it. The university I retired from had a contract with Dell and we could get discounts buying Dells for personal use. I may check to see if we can still do that. I want a laptop that has word or something like it because I use that for business. I also want something that works with the printer that I have. I'll let you guys know what I go with and how I like it.

I usually buy refurbished laptops from tigerdirect or a similar outfit. They don't last as long as a new one, already being 3-4 years old, but in general they can be a good deal.

LibreOffice is a MS Office clone with versions available for Windows or Mac as well as the original linux environment it came from. Its a free download so you can try it and if you don't like it all you are out is a bit of time.

A year ago I purchased an Asus x205 ta notebook for $185. The new ones run windows 10. They are great little machines for email and web surfing. Since I bought mine my desktop hardly gets used. Boots up in about 15 seconds, light handy and surfing will run over 8 hrs on a charge.
