Inherited

Post by jsimmons »

My dad recently passed away, and I inherited his 1957 (228xxx) Model 94 chambered in 30-30. Some interesting observations:

0) This gun has never had a round chambered.

1) It came with the original store receipt (Sears), and was purchased for the hefty sum of $79.95 along with a cleaning kit ($2.49), and two boxes of ammo (2x $2.85).

2) It was purchased on 03 Dec 1958.

3) The two boxes of ammo are still "somewhere in the closet", and I'll get them when they're found.

4) The gun still has the original carrying case.

5) The gun has a butt pad on it, Since it wasn't on the original receipt, I assume it came with the gun.

6) There's a National Rifle Association decal on the right side of the butt. Given the nature of the rest of the info I have, I 'm assuming the decal was applied at the factory.

7) I would say this gun is in "as new" condition.

Good morning
That is a heart grabbing way to receive a fine Winchester. Thankfully the family decided to keep it within the family. I trust you never have to part with it and it brings many a good memory to your life.

Please accept our condolences on your loss, jsimmons.

I'd like to see some pics, also - as AFAIK, no pre-64 Winchester 94 was issued with a factory-installed rubber butt pad, unless it went through the Winchester Custom Shop.

I think I may have misspoke. It's a leather butt cover that laces at the bottom. I used the term butt pad without putting much thought into it. I'll post some pics in a few minutes/.

I've kinda halfway decided to take the rifle to the range (with some fresh ammo, of course). If I do, I'm gonna put a Williams peep sight on it (only $36 from Midway) since it's already got the requisite holes drilled/tapped on the side of the receiver. This means I don't have to violate the rifle in any way to mount it.

I would call that "like new"; now, if you had the original carton, etc... I'd call that "new in box".

Again, condolences on you & your family's loss.

I know from direct experience that is a "tough way" to get a gun...

Enjoy it and treasure all the memories it brings to you...

I think the best way to honor your Dad would be to take it out hunting and make some more memories!

A very nice inheritance, indeed - the epitome of "pristine".

BTW, if you want to remove the NRA sticker w/o any damage to the stock finish, "goo-gone" works really well.

Yes, I'd like to remove that decal. It wouldn't be so bad if it was in the correct orientation.

I wouldn't use Goo Gone. From my experience with it, it melts and dissolves house paint and foam pretty quickly. Maybe you have better experience with it on rifle stocks. I might try turpentine for that. Or better yet, there is some sticker removal stuff that might not wreck the sticker at all. Maybe steam?

To the OP: sorry for your loss. No need to worry about the ammo not being "fresh", but the old stuff in a box makes a nice collectable. And being that old would be worth a little.

That is a nice old gun. Now I have to go buy one and not shoot it for the boy!

FWIW, I've been using GooGone for years, to remove sticker residue (not the sticker itself) w/o any issues, including on gunstocks.

Of course, I first peel off/away as much of the sticker as possible, before using the GooGone to remove whatever won't easily come off manually.

Thanks for that info. I am still a little leery after seeing what it does to other stuff.
