need belt holster recommendation for 7 1/2 inch colt

Post by Walker »

My local shop bought a colt this week and I happened to be there when the manager was showing it to someone. Thankfully that guy passed on it and it'll be coming home with me. Now I need to find a holster that will be comfortable walking and sitting; since I'll be slinging a rifle part time it also needs to be a crossdraw.

Shipped to San Francisco in 1913 in 32-20, rebarreled with a period barrel and cylinder in a more interesting caliber.

I really like El Paso Saddlery's "Slim Jim" holster. I have a cross draw for my SAA, and two of the same in a straight hang for my 1851s. I would recommend a lined holster, it'll hold it's shape much better than an unlined one. Costs more... but, IMO, worth it, (my straight hangs are not)!

Congrats, nice lookin' gun... and in an uncommon cartridge.

Hey Griff, is that holster at an angle where you can sit with the long barrels?

Depends on where you wear it. Over the of the hip bone, yes. More to the front, not so much... but, that's where I wear mine, most of my sitting isn't in a chair, but rather, on a stump/stool where nothing interferes with the barrel.

Thanks guys. My field holsters get pretty scratched up going cross country in the mojave. The El Paso slim jim might be the best for that kind of use but I was looking at the Longhorn Companion from Barranti too.

I have the Duke model X-draw for my 5 1/2" Colt Cimarron clone 45. The Holster is lined, and holds it shape well. Mine is also by El paso Saddlery. Not the slim-jim but is very functional.

Check Simply Rugged Holsters. Not "cowboy" but built for heavy field use. A nice take on the old Roy Baker pancake holster.

I've been using one of their cattleman holsters for my shorter colt. Not sure how the pancake would be with a 7.5 in barrel.

That's just beautiful. I kinda freaked out till i read the whole post. A good friend had the exact twin of yours back in the mid 90's.

Congrats. That should be a blast to shoot.

Considering how scarce the 1st gens with these markings were I still wonder how someone found a takeoff barrel. The surprising thing is that rock island auctions showed another one like this that was a rebarrel. Makes me think the longer barrels weren't popular and we're pulled before they became valuable.

Almost forgot, if it weren't for John Taffin I wouldn't have known there was anything special about those barrel markings. I've only started to read the books Skeeter wrote.

Makes a really nice crossdraw. Here's one he made for my 4 5/8" Blackhawk.

Forget the gunbelt, I want that 1st. Gen.....and assuming it's original, only about 1 in 700 or so that's exists. Nice snag dude...very nice.

Can I have it? Your very good friend and confidant, Jack eeerrrrrr...6 :D

I got all excited and spoke too fast. I see it used to be a 32-20......but still, a very nice gun and yes, I'll stay with my original statement.....can I have it?----6 :

Reread this post and think that I should say that the most comfortable gun-belt I own is a Duke, rough-out by El Paso Saddlery. The rough-out makes it stay where you put it instead of slipping down no matter how tight you make it. The holster that matches it would be great in a cross-draw for the 7 1/2.
I would suggest that the holster be closed on the bottom to avoid that long barrel getting stuffed with something. When I was young enough to slide down hills and such, (last year?) it seems I'd end up with mud/dirt/leaves etc on the end of my holster. I've ended up with ringed barrels too which is why many years ago I switched to plugged or sewn shut holsters for field carry.

Yes Sir, closed toe holster for certain. Leaning toward an El Paso crossdraw in a Slim Jim or Threepersons. Also like the Dan Mayer version of the Threepersons just because it can be worn crossdraw or strongside.
