UCSF spends $9 to collect $1, if UCSF collects $100 and spends $90 to get another $10, at the end of the day UCSF has $20.

The U.S. government spends $18 dollars for every $1 they collect.

The government will collect $100, spend $1800, and then appropriate another $100.

At the end of the day, the U.S. government is $1700 in debt.

So... No. Government doesn't do nearly as well.

.

I'm wondering if some of that charity's significant overhead goes to pay for the charity director's BMW...............

Charity starts at home, so I'd rather help out a needy relative (even a shirt-tail relative).

Several years ago I found out how much The American Red Cross CEO got paid. I haven't given them a dime since...

Whenever we get a call from a charity we always ask, how much actually goes to the charity. If they don't answer or try to feed us a line of bs we tell them to remove us from the list (usually doesn't work) and then hang up.

We give to the Salvation Army. You can even tell them how often to contact you.

We all need to be cognizant of the charities we give to! I'm a big supporter of cancer research, and the charities that do it right. But I wont give to charities that take more than they give! I'd rather give the money directly to those undergoing treatment, who need the funds just to survive when they can't work.
My oldest daughter went through this the last 18 months, and has just completed and won her battle. Still have another 5-6 years to go before she knows it's truly a win. But if more of the money donated to cancer actually went to research, we'd be winning the battle by now! There's never been anything since polio that's been looked at by so many researchers, and so much time and money spent on it; with so little success.

What I don't understand is why they still exist. All the data on charity watch comes from their IRS filings which means the gov knows they're a scam.

United Way is another that takes in far more than it gives... but, it does have a feature where if you give thru them, and designate a specific recipient, 100% of your gift goes to that recipient. I always designate where I want my gift to go. They hardly ask anymore... :P I had a guy call on my cell phone last nite... "...would you give $100 to our Veterans?" I said, "I'm a veteran, how much is my part?" He hung up.

problem with united way, is that no matter whom you designate, once that charity has the amount united way has decided to allocate for them, then your donation is given to whomever they choose....including groups I don't want to give a penny to.

I will not give to united way anymore.

Ronald McDonald House is another great place where 85% goes to services. All sorts of support to families with seriously ill children.

It is good to look these things up.

Also good to see if these groups have "taken a stand" on other issues you care about. You'd be stunned how many turn around and donate money, or at least support, bizarre left-wing groups and especially anti-gun groups. Those never get a penny from me!

Our own Jim Taylor lives, and works at a Mission in Mozambique. The mission is worthy of support, and they do the Lord's work.

Meals on Wheels spends $0.87 out of every dollar to feed seniors. They get my support.

This was back in the 70s in Ohio
, but when Grandma passed, Grandpa was truly helpless. Meals on Wheels would bring him one hot, and sizable lunch, and while they didn't usually charge, Grandpa gratefully gave them a couple bucks for each one.
I don't hear about them, but they are local out here as well.....

I used to do business with their Portland commissary kitchen. They produce over 5000 meals per day out of that one location alone. They operate the local senior centers also and most of those have their own kitchens. Good people that run the operation.

Slightly off subject, but the dang blasted liberal do-gooders out here have shut down a few feeding operations due to no health inspections, etc.... One church was taking out turkeys, stuffing, taters, and salad on holidays, and got written up.

While I worked for General Motors they (management & union) tried very hard for 100% participation for sign up for donations for United Way. Tried very very hard. I gave until one year the United Way had the embezzlement scam and I would not participate any longer. It really upset GM & Union. Oh well.
Meals on wheels & Electric Co. help programs I donate to, also Salvation Army.
