Another WWII vet passes

My father Passed this morning at 92 years of age. He was still living alone and driving up until two months ago when he decided not to renew his drivers license and gave his car to our niece. He had long been suffering from Leukemia and just decided he was not going to endure the treatments any more.the VA has picked up his treatments and civilian hospital costs through Vets Choice.
He was/is a christian and is now in Gods capable hands.

My maternal grandfather passed almost exactly eight years ago . He was also a WWII vet and was 91 at the time of death !

A side note, my dad was one of thirteen sailers that were specially trained to install the floating bridges on the Mine River during the invasion that closed in on Berlin. He was removed from that duty by his Captain because he was the pilot of his personal launch. There were no survivors in that detachment to place the floating bridges. I would have never been born had he became a hero that day.

Chuck, I am sorry for your loss, but it seems your father had a long and active life almost to the very end, and passed peacefully. My Dad, also a WWII vet, passed in 2012. There just aren't many left.
It seemed when we were baby boomer kids that everyone's dad was a vet -- and that they surely would live forever.

Sorry to hear of your loss and our Nation's loss as a whole. I will pray for your family and friends but like you said.....he is no doubt in God's capable hands and not sick any longer.

You have my condolences. My Dad was also a WWII vet, and would turn 90 this year; but he passed away in 2008 from lung cancer complications. He was my role model and best friend. Our world is a poorer place with the passing of their generation.

on a WWII-related-but-in-a-strange-way: I was watching "Jaws" last night, it was made in 1975. I haven't watched it in decades.
-- The Robert Shaw character, Quint: in the movie during an overnight on the open ocean, he tells the story about a ship sinking and sharks eating the sailors ..... I suddenly realized that he was talking about being a survivor of the sinking of USS Indianapolis. As I was watching the movie, for the very first time I actually understood what he was talking about.
-- I did a bit of research and learned that the sinking was on 30 July 1945, my dad's 27th birthday. He was in the Navy then, but not on the Indianapolis. That would have been a hell of a birthday present.

When I reflect on all the WWII vets who survived those years ..... I am friends with many whose fathers served in WWII, a couple of whom survived a sinking. Those guys were tough !!!!

Sorry for your loss.

I lost my dad (Army Air Corps) in 99. We buried my mom today. My cousins and I spent the late afternoon looking at pictures we found in the house. We found pictures of my uncles who served in the south pacific. I learned a lot about them and what they did. Two farm boys who were really good at fixing things. My one uncle was very good at tuning propellers. He worked with Pappy Boyington.
