Wonder where he came from?

Post by TedH »

After church on Sunday as we approached our driveway down the gravel county road we live on, there was a dog standing right in the middle of the road. Figured it was one of the neighbor's dogs, but then as we got close I didn't recognize him. He fell in right behind us, and followed us all the way down our driveway and into the garage. I got out of the car and was shocked at the condition of the poor little feller. We hadn't got another dog since my little Dachshund buddy passed last winter, so we didn't have any dog food to share. We did have some leftover home made hamburger vegetable soup which he was glad to help us get rid of. He wandered off, but then was back laying on the rug at the back door a short time later, thinking he found his new home, I suppose. We shared pics on the internet with friends and the local shelters. Nobody's yet to claim him, so we took him to the Vet yesterday to see if he had been implanted with an ID chip. No such luck, so I guess we have a new dog. He's a very gentle boy, and just wants to be right by me wherever I am.

Been roughing it for a while.

Seemed pretty happy to have a warm bed

He wasn't impressed with his bath

After a couple days of rest, warmth, and good food, he's starting to perk up!

Having been owned by several Dachshunds myself I can under stand you being hesitant. :0 But that looks like a pretty nice boy that found your door step. Looks properly embarrassed in the tub and proud to be clean and dry. Should make a fine dog from the looks of him. You may need a bigger dog door though. :)

That's a fine looking dog! Talk about gaining a loyal companion. He looks smart and ready to please. Good luck with him. Please keep us posted. And yeah, the dog door looks a bit puny.
Kind regards,

The vet said he was about 2 years old, and he is a Pointer, probably full blood. I took him out for a walk tonight, and he's got the instinct. Just need to get him to point the quail, and not the mice.

An Uncle used to have a full blooded German Shorthair Pointer, and that was a great Pheasant dog. He found many a wounded bird which otherwise would have gotten into a coyote's stomach. My Uncle used to go out on a 4 bird limit with 2 shells, and come back with 4 birds. The Pointer, named Ol' Snoop, usually found wounded birds that other hunters had lost.

I asked the wife, what do you think this dog is? showing her the pic here and she says "bird dog" which is our language for pointer. Her Daddy used to raise them so she is very familiar with them. Play ball with him to reinforce his desire to retrieve and just let him use his genetics for the rest of it. Don't worry too much about him pointing mice or the little "stink birds" that hide in the tall grass. He'll work out the difference.
I had a pointer once that would catch little pigs. I think he just loved the squeal.

Some dogs are just meant to be. Perhaps, even He matches you up with one. Thor suddenly passed about a year ago at a young 8 years old. I was pretty sure I was never getting another, so I decided I'd only get a standard poodle because they didn't shed, and were somewhat hypoallergenic. They usually cost thousands, so I thought I'd not have to worry about another for quite some time. Oh, well....next thing I knew, a fellow up north had an untended litter, and was trying to find good homes for them, and only wanted what he had put into basic puppy vet fees, so I got Odie for a pittance. He's getting to be about 8 months, and is a real pip...Smarter than any pooch I've ever had. This summer, I'll see if he'll run a rabbit or find a grouse.

The same thing happened to me. In 2014, two days before Christmas, I was out at my Shedquarters sorting wheel-weights and out of the corner of my eye, I caught a glimpse of something small and white. I turned around to see a tiny little puppy run into my shed/reloading room. It went into a corner like a flash and got behind some tools. I put on some heavy leather work gloves and got him out. The little beast savagely bit my gloved hands and growled and snarled like a Lobo wolf.

The tiny little pup was extremely malnourished and felt like a wool sock full of match sticks. He calmed down right away and I got to check him out. With his white and brownish-red markings and whiskers, he looked just like an Old Man. I said, that's what I'll call you...the Old Man. Well, when my daughter got home and saw him, she immediately named him Brody.

So, a year later, "Old Man Brody" is doing fine and is a much beloved member of our family. He is still tiny; standing maybe 8 inches tall and about 14 inches long and weighs less than 5 lbs. I think he is a poodle/terrier mix of some kind.

This little dog is absolutely fearless and is the best watchdog we have ever had.
