1886 ejection question

Post by Aussie Chris »

Still have not had a chance to reload for my 1886 40-65 yet.

Have put some starline cases into the chmaber and upon ejection the extractor does its job but the cases are rolling across the top of the receiver, not being flung up and away from the gun. I assume this is an ejector issue? The ejector appears fine but I don't really have another original '86 to compare it to.

Has anyone else come across this? Is it the way it's supposed to eject? Just comparing it to my old 1894s that fling the brass away from the rifle.

Does speed increase the distance thrown?

G'day Griff. Nope. I've tried ejecting them pretty quick and slow and the same result.

Are you saying it only happens with the starline but works with other brass? That would be a dimensional difference. If it does the same with all brass that would indicate a sticky ejector. Possibly, rusted in place, ejector spring missing or poorly fitted

Chris,
I got out a couple of 86s to be sure I remember correctly and that ejector holds a good amount of pressure against the bottom of the head of the cartridge which makes it ride the top of the chamber as it's extracted. When the end of the cartridge clears the chamber that spring pressure makes the cartridge fly out of the action on both of mine. (One is a Winchester from 1916 and the other a Browning.) Both work the same way. My guess is your ejector spring is broken or has lost it's poop. Either way you will need a new one.

I've been off all day at a 3-Gun match with my son... that's what I'd have answered given your reply to my earlier question. But, as Nate notes, it could be rusted or gummed up with dried, hard, grease that's never gotten properly cleaned out.

My Browning ejects in a vigorous manner when operated briskly, but only a little so when operated slowly.

Thanks gents. Looks like I'll be pulling it apart for a good clean and inspection. Nate, I only have access to starline brass

So I pulled the old girl down. So fascinating pulling down something made in 1888. An engineering masterpiece for the time.

Here is a pic of my ejector components. All are there but my spring appears to be a lot different fron the one on offer from homestead firearms. My parts are in the bottom pic.

Thoughts?

Assemble/pin the bolt/ejector & lever together outside the gun. swing the lever through it's arc while pushing on the ejector. If the ejector moves freely through the arc it should work in the gun as well.

Thanks Nate, I did try that and it works.

I pulled it all down and cleaned out the old oil dating back to 1888

Put her all back together, that lower tang with hammer and spring was fun to get back in :?

And no change after all that. I might buy the thicker spring in my pic in post above.
