I buried my father Monday

Post by draperjojo »

He was a good man, a farm boy from West Virginia that graduated with a degree in Mechanical Eng from the Naval Academy in 1954. He flew the Hawaii, Wake Island, Japan route for the Air Force in C119 and C124's during the late 50's and then went Civilian with General Electric but kept involved in the military. He got his Master Degree in the 70's. When he officially retired out of the service he was a Lt Colonel. He built houses with Habitat for Humanity and was heavily involved with his local Lions Club at one time being their President. We buried him on Whidbey Island with full military honors. He lived a great life and spent his last 15 years on the Island driving his tractor, working in his yard, and his greenhouse. He was married to my mother for 41 years til she passed of cancer, and got married again 3 years later to a great lady who made his last 15 years a real joy for him. I am really gonna miss him. Neither one of us did a project without the other knowing all about it from pictures and phone calls. She asked me to help her with the paperwork, and after the funeral she made sure that I had all of his guns. I kept one of the cartridges from the Honor Guard salute and I think I'm going to put a hole thru it and wear it around my neck when I go hunting to kind of take him with me.

Sorry for your great loss, you and the family will be in my prayers. Lost my dad in 1962, I still miss him especially when I handle the old Winchester 30-30 I gave him a couple of years be fore he died.

I gave my dad a Winchester 30-30 Christmas of 96, that was one of the guns I brought home, along with a 39A. The rest weren't levers.

You are a lucky man to have had so much time with a guy like your dad. Sounds like he lived life well, with gusto, and helped many people every step of the way. Follow in his footsteps and you will do likewise.

He was absolutely a great man, and a simple man. I strive to have the integrity that my dad had, and he lived to make other people's lives better. So many people came up to me during the Funeral Home service, the graveside service, and the luncheon that followed to tell me about things dad had done for people in that community, and that he had tried to do anonymously but someone told on him...hahaha

I am so sorry for your loss. Your father, by the above accounts, was indeed a great man; one who lived his life well and wisely by leaving behind a meaningful legacy.

There is much to be happy for, even during this immediate season of loss - the great memories he left behind for you, your family, and many others whose paths he crossed. His spirit certainly lives on.

Blessings, Levergun brother. Prayers sent your way.

I think that for a son or daughter to lose their mother or father is one of the hardest experiences of a life time ever. Been there too and done that. Had to watch my best friend suffer through losing his Dad years later after I lost mine.

Some life experiences are so painful that they can't be explained to others who have not experienced a similar loss. So when you lose a parent, you become part of a small club where they understand the pain, and not much more need be said.

I am truly sorry for your loss, but it sounds like he lived well, and left behind quite a legacy too. I am grateful for that for him, and for you!

God Bless you both,

Sorry I didn't see this until now and I'm very sorry for your loss. Losing my Dad was the single most traumatic incident of my life, sometimes we just don't know how special they are until they're gone. It sounds like you Dad was a fine man who left behind many accomplishments that will bless a lot of people for a long time.

It sounds like your dad lived a full good life. My dad did too. He died just short of 90 in 2003. Oddly, I wasn't as sad as most think I should have been. He sort of lived about 6 months too long. Alzheimer`s. He was a very strong christian and I knew he was with mom who died 10 years earlier. When he went to the convalescent hospital it was harder for me to take his S&W 1917 .45 ACP from him that he always slept with.
