A morning in Wyoming

Post by jnyork »

Wife and I took a trip into the Red Desert country of Wyoming a few days ago. Over 70 miles of dirt road and two-track, never saw another vehicle or person.

Oregon Buttes, a landmark and navigation aid for emigrants on the Oregon Trail, Mormon Trail, Pony Express route. North side:

Saw many, many of these, this with my Canon camera set on 60x telephoto:

These little guys were about 10 feet off the trail:

In this area, this is what passes for a "well-improved" dirt road. Other trails can get quite a bit tougher.

On the way back out of the desert, the mighty Wind River Range with over 40 peaks at 13,000+ feet.

Thank you for taking the time to post those great pictures. I know that I enjoyed them and probably every other person viewing them too.

"Well Improved"...

Wyoming Speak for "Regularly used 2 track".

"Unimproved" = "2 track made by a horse and mule team.... in 1893..."

My wife, daughter and I were in Wyoming back in 2007. The daughter and I would like to make it back out there someday. It was really beautiful out there and we loved the openness but neither of us like the cold winters you have. I'm glad you're enjoying the great out doors in a great state.

I loved'em so much that the gravel road picture is now my computer background, thanks again.
