How'd I do...?

Post by Bridger »

Back in the 50's, my grandpa didn't have much money but scraped up enough to pay $12 for a brand new Remington 514 single shot .22. He used it quite a bit, and when my dad came along he taught him to shoot with it and my dad then proceeded to keep the local squirrel population in check with it. Fast forward to the 1990s, and my dad taught me to shoot with that very same rifle. It's a tack driver for a simple little .22, and I've always enjoyed shooting it. Well today, lo and behold, I was in a pawn shop and found one sitting on the shelf for $79.99. I started to leave without it, but I just couldn't. No pictures yet, as I'm not gonna be able to pick it up until the end of the week because the guy at the shop who runs background checks wasn't there today.

Anybody got any experience with this rifle? Think I got a fair price? It's the only one I've ever seen for sale....

I had one 30 years ago and it shot nice but had a habit of breaking the extractor.

For a shooter, $80 plus tax is an /excellent/ deal.

No problem feeding it LR, shorts, CB, whatever.

I'd do a functional clean up, strip down to parts, maybe home-made barrel re-crown, and you're good to go.

Take it out and use it as intended. And take a couple long breaks to recall old memories.

Yep, that was my first rifle too. I have one in the closet that Jr. used as well. They are indeed good shooters.

Any of the "teen" series Remington's are very good shooters. I have a 512 that is a tack driver.
I would pay that for 514 quickly.
Enjoy !

Glad to hear I have yalls approval! (I knew I could count on yall to support a firearm purchase lol). Wecsoger, I plan to use it on my trapline, and just like you said, take plenty of time to recall old memories. I gotta say, I never envisioned myself being this excited about a .22
