"You have cancer"

Post by Bill in Oregon »

Almost 30 years ago, my wife gave birth to her first child in a hospital in Lakeview, a small town in eastern Oregon. She needed a blood transfusion. It was tainted with Hepatitis C.
Fast forward. The virus has remained in the background, stable, since the 1980s, but then the viral load begins to increase, and my wife's physician says it is time to intervene -- and thank the Lord there are finally effective treatments with tolerable side effects. We enroll in the program at Oregon Health Sciences University in Portland -- a very well regarded hospital complex -- and the initial ultrasound and exam show my wife's liver to be in pretty darned good shape with minimal signs of the cirrhosis common with Hep C. "You're so healthy you might not qualify for Harmoni or Sovaldi" they tell us.
Then they call back a few days later, saying that after further analysis of the lab tests, they have concluded my wife has a carcinoma.
What a kick in the stomach after the initial good news.
Went back for CAT scans yesterday, and now are waiting for our new battle to begin.
Prayers and good thoughts for my brave, sweet wife, Anna, most welcome.

Bill,

I'll put both you and your wife on my prayer list. May God give you both the strength you'll need as you battle this disease.

Bill, prayers from Brookings.

FWIW, after I was diagnosed w/cancer I went directly to my Pastor. Through prayer I received peace and well being and realized that a cancer diagnosis is not a death sentence. I underwent treatments/surgery with Drs. in Coos Bay that were associated with OHSU and with God's help directing excellent surgeons and treatment specialists, I am cancer free...

I'm certain your wife will be too...

Guys, you can't know how much I appreciate your support. I am more worried than Anna is; she was cured of melanoma more than a decade ago.
Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Be sure to let your wife know how many friends and strangers are praying for her complete recovery, it sure helped me when I needed help.

You both will be on my nightly prayer list, Bill. It seems to me that it would be tougher to watch a loved one go through that than to deal with it myself. God's blessings to y'all.

Thoughts and prayers !

Express to your wife to think positively in whatever treatment she takes .

My mom had Non Hodgkins Lyphoma and Ovarian Cancer . She went into remmision three times before she finally succombed . Her doctor later told me he had not expected her to fight it as long as she did except for her positive outlook on her problem . She went to a hospital here in central VA but also went to E.M. Anderson in Houston for a second opinion a couple times .

Prayers up Bill. Although you and I have never met in person, I've always felt a connection to you and your family due to our Alturas ties so to speak. My Cindy was diagnosed with Kidney Cancer in July 2014 and had her kidney removed in Sep 2014 so, I know what your gut reaction feels like and what you are going through. Best to your Anna. Once again - prayers up.

We've never met, but I know the road you're going down. My prayers to you and your brave wife. And to repeat the above recommendation, hemp oil, or Rick Simpson oil, has helped my little sister through 4 different cancers. Kidney, Pancreas twice, and Thyroid. And so far, she's beat them. That, and a super positive attitude.

God Bless, Tom.

Prayers up. What others have said about it NOT being a 'death sentence' is ABSOLUTELY true, especially when found so early.

Lots of work ahead though...

As you obviously are already aware, FAITH has a huge role in remission and cure. Sounds like you have that one well covered.

Oh man that hurts, Bill. All best wishes from here.

Friend Pete, the rancher whose junipers you helped me cut last year has been fighting liver cancer for a year and a half. He should have been fighting it for two years but the doc he was seeing mis-diagnosed it as "sever acid reflux" for 6 months before he saw another doctor and got on track. He is going to OHSU for chemo now, for something which is super-targeted as I understand it. So Anna is at the right place!

I was over the "shock and awe", in about 24 hours, after I was told I had the big "C". Surgery was out of the question, so I went through radiation treatments. I finished 2 weeks ago and all looks fine.

The caregivers (spouse of a seriously ill people) have got the hard job. When I was being treated for throat cancer all I had to do was lay there and be sick (in the hospital and/or the radiation treatment machine), and my wife did all the worrying, and fixing my "special meals" (radiation burned the inside of my mouth/throat and there wasn't much I could eat

Sitting in a room with your wife and being told she has cancer is a very tough thing to go through. I remember the Dr. telling me "She won't sleep much tonight but that is normal, this is not the death sentence it used to be".

We found great strength talking to positive survivors. My wife had great little book of quotes that helped build her faith daily, as well as many people praying for her.

Thankfully our Dear Lord was merciful to my wife and she is now cancer free. It was very hard on her, but also a rough time on the entire family.

Praying your wife has tremendous results from her treatment and heals well.

Sincerely,
Sam
