Movies To Watch: John Wick

Okay, let me first say that I am not a huge Keanu Reeves fan. He's a one trick pony in terms of acting as far as I'm concerned: The clueless, naive guy thrust into circumstances beyond his control. Not that he doesn't do it well, it just gets old time after time after time. Very rarely does he branch out from that safezone of acting, but John Wick is one of those exceptions. Amazingly enough, he does a great job.

The prerequisite to this movie is that you have to like gun play. John is a retired assassin-slash-hitman-something who is none to happily brought back into the business. Reeves plays the part perfectly and while you can see that clueless naive guy just beneath the surface, he plays the part as if worn away through many years in the business of killing. While I have my doubts as to whether it was intentional decision since it's merely a diluted mixture of the two roles, it comes off perfectly here, regardless.

The writing, directing and technical expertise of this movie shine. And when I mean shine, I mean taken to a level rarely seen in a gun flick. When the bullets aren't flying, I couldn't help but to smirk. The everyday life of an assassin is pulled off with finesse; so much so I really don't want to give much away in order not to spoil it. John Wick takes itself seriously, but doesn't hesitate to take the lightest brush of humor to an otherwise dark movie. It's well placed in every respect and manages not to slit its own wrists in its overapplication.

Mechanically, Wick is equally praise worthy, especially if you notice the finer details concerning firearms. The loadouts are realistic and ammo is very finite when not being pulled off a dead body. One shot kills are rare in this movie and while I could nitpick a couple of scenes, when was the last time you saw a gun actually jam on the protagonist outside some critical plot juncture? How about actually clearing the gun? The movie does so much right that I could ignore things like the occasional enemy waiting to chamber a round until danger was upon him or the unnatural accuracy. But hey, we're assassins here, so I'll cut them some slack.

Much as it pains me to say it, John Wick easily places in my top 5 Gun Porn movies... even with the Keanu Reeves handicap in play. It's the latter that makes me feel I need to shore up my case for you to watch this movie, but I'm going to reign myself in. No spoilers, but you'll just have to trust me. I might even buy this movie, and that's saying a lot.

sounds like a decent one to while away a rainy afternoon - i just put it in my Netflix rotation

I'd like to see some more westerns, but i guess, - much like the government, the movie studios know what is best for us   --- there are still westerns being churned out, but oftentimes they are straight to video type stuff found on Netflix and there have been some i couldnt get through the first 15 minutes

As far as contemporary movies and gun play --- i still put the gunfight scene in "Heat" (w/ Robert DeNiro and Al Pacino plus many others) as the best all time . kind of a 90's version of Wild Bunch

I bought it and really enjoyed it. It really had the feel of reality about it. Not as stark as some others, as there were a few effects... but nothing way over-the-top like some others.

Good review also.

Sounds like another foray into the genre...

Looking to rent R.E.D. and R.E.D.2 for many of the same reasons..

I to don't care much for Keanu. Seen one of his interviews and he seemed clueless in real life. But I did enjoy watching John Wick.

As for westerns, have you seen "Riders of the Purple Sage" with Ed Harris? It was pretty good, even as a made for TV movie, and seems relatively unknown. Another pretty unknown film with good action "Proof of Life". There used to be clips of the rescue scene on youtube, but they disapeared. There are 2 or 3 clips of Riders of the Purple Sage there.

Just a reminder, if you hear of a movie or TV show, youtube usually has at least trailers, if not a number of clips of the film. I think about half of John Wick is on youtube in short clips of the action scenes.

I've found complete episodes of several recent TV shows there, and sometimes complete movies, especially older ones. Theres likely almost every old tv show made on there also usually listed by season and episode.

I couldn't get past the super-humaness of the Wick character. I can usually let most lack-of-reality things go at the movies, but this and the poor tactical maneuvering was too much for me. The camera and technical and cars and fighting were all fun and well done. Overall, meh.

Just watched this one this morning based on this thread ----- ( almost 2 months later )

As i predicted earlier, was a good movie to while away a rainy morning

Was enjoyable-- i liked the seemingly alternate universe that revolved around the old downtown hotel

Was a fanciful tale to be sure, but so are most movies. Ian McShane and Willem Defoe are the scene stealers

I dont get much time to sit down and spend 90 minutes or so just watching a movie, so when i do, im glad when its a fun one

For me, the DeNiro/Pacino movie "Heat" has to be close to the top of the list

I also like Russel Crowes "3:10 to Yuma" - not only for the cross bedecked single action, but also the gent with the twin Schofields

A lot of Tom Selleck movies , "Last Stand at Saber River" and "Crossfire Trail"

My better half was at tractor supply yesterday and they had some dvds on sale there by the cashier . As she glanced through them she looked twice at the picture on one and recognized it was a lever action , right there on the cover. She thought I might like it so "Winchester '73" came home with her. Not a bad flick for being made in 1950 . 8)

You got that right, he had an outstanding combat flying record in WWII and continued in the Air Force Reserve into the Vietnam War. Hollywood today could do with a few more like him.

Old thread, but this video reminded me of it....

https://youtu.be/FmkRquTjN_0

The drills look fun at least; and the tips he was given seem to make sense (but I've never done that kind of competitive shooting).

....I still have yet to see the movie though....

I just have a hard time seeing movies these days because it seems like 90% of the actors are anti-gun fanatics suffering from Trump derangement syndrome.....

It’s an ok movie. But like most movies today relies on post production special effects. Eastwood did The Eiger Sanction. Same basic plot but the acting carried the film.

.

Keanu Reeves has now made 3 different John Wick movies:

John Wick (released in 2014)
John Wick: Chapter 2 (released in 2017)
John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (scheduled for release May 2019)

There was also supposed to be a TV series, the Continental, that's had a TBA release date for awhile.

I guess maybe I will watch it, after reading his, uh, stirring defense of the Second Amendment....

"...he has been quoted by independent.co.uk as saying: “You mean should citizens be able to have a weapon? Yeah, why not? I am not fundamentally against citizens having access to a weapon, but I think that it has complications, the use of it. It’s probably not the wisest thing. Personally, I don’t own a weapon.”..."

https://www.google.com/amp/s/guncarrier ... ntrol/amp/

But I won't ever watch another DeNiro film unless it is pirated and I know he won't get a penny for it.

I just watched "The Domestics" with Kate Bosworth, lots of cool guns including a BREN of all things! Near the end she uses a Henry (Big Boy?) A good example of why a Henry wouldn't be my top pick, with that goofy .22 style mag tube!

I got a copy of "John Wick" from the $5 movie bin.

I'd already seen "John Wick II" or whatever the sequel is called. A real shoot 'em up.

I liked the first one better. Although it was also pretty much a shoot 'em up, I liked the 'story'.

"You stole my car and killed my dog". Bang.
