What's with the badgers in England?

Post by Hobie »

I have a D-I-S-T-A-N-T cousin in England who is in high dudgeon about a badger 'cull'. Apparently he thinks it is the equivalent of the Turkish genocide of the Armenians. What say our English members?
Sincerely,

Hobie

Badgers at one time were classed as vermin and could be controlled but then Badger baiting with dogs became quite common so the antis caused such a fuss that Badgers were given full protection under the law.
Since then Badger numbers have increased many fold and have become a pest to everyone in the countryside except the bunny hugging antis. The dairy farmers especially have a problem with bovine TB which they believe Badgers spread from one farm to another, so the government have allowed a Badger cull in certain areas to see if it helps stop the spread of TB.
The antis are really having a hissie fit about this.
Dead road kill Badgers are a very common sight nowadays, a few years ago you rarely saw a Badger dead or alive. Where I live I have several Badger setts all around the place, of course I can't LEGALLY do anything about them, even though they are destroying ground nesting birds etc.
Brian May, guitarist with Queen is really up in arms about the poor little Badgers and is seen protesting about the cull on TV etc.
In my opinion, the only good thing about Badgers is they make fine shaving brushes!
BADGERS, BADGERS, WE DON'T NEED NO STINKING BADGERS!
If more men loved and cherished their wives as much as I love bacon the world would be a much better place.

Gamekeeper, I thought you sported a beard! Or is that also a result from the badger protection?

Too bad you can't force the bunny huggers to hug a badger. I would love to see them try. In my opinion, forcing the people who want to stop the badger cull to each and every one to hug a live and very annoyed badger would be quite fun. Those loveable wild animals are just furry humans who want love, aren't they???

The European 'badger' (Meles meles') is not the same as the American badger (Taxidea taxus) but apparently they share a common disposition.
