What should I do with this little guy?

Post by Panzercat »

He showed up at my doorstep pretty skittish, but wouldn't leave.I think the park across the street was giving him a fright with all the weekend commotion. Got him to calm down and trust me and now, unfortunately, I'm his best friend. Cute dog. Looks like a Chihuahua mix of something. High energy but even tempered. Still somewhat of a pup unless I'm mistaken.

I'm thinking he is or was some bodies pet. He wasn't skin and bones, plays fetch decently. No hits on the found posters we put out at the park or craigs list local. My wife is seriously against keeping him, which is too bad. He has a pretty good disposition. I'll make the links visible when I get the chance, but until then you'll have go click on them.

Autocorrect insists you have to lick on them, but I think we can safely ignore that advice.

He's a cute fellow,
I would take him, but my my black lab would kill him.
Not because he is mean, he is just so strong........... he plays rough.

He kinda looks like part Rat Terrier. My Wife's cousin has a Rat Terrier that runs circles around big dogs. it makes Me feel like I'm a Kid again.

Too bad if he is lost.

Or if he is need of a home.

Looks to me like he picked a good one. You will have to work on the wife maybe. :D

We've had a couple show up at camp. Rabbit or bear dogs that the owner forgot to turn on their collar before letting them go.
It's big woods and there is nothing for miles and when they stumbled onto us they were some happy and usually wont leave your side or break contact with you.
Luckily, we found the owners in every case.
"Oh bother", said Pooh, as he chambered another round.

I used to think the same thing about my lab but my litte Rat Terrier will put her in her place real quick.

I guess if it were me and I wanted to keep him, well, the wife I think would enjoy her new apartment.
But, my wife is dog/animal crazy, I would be the one trying to find the dog a new home.
Could always advertise for pet adoption, that way you can screen potential owners yourself, dog gets good home, some family or child has a pet and friend. winners all the way around.

.

Walk him around the neighborhood a few different times - maybe someone will recognize him.

(remember - happy wife = happy life ;) )

Looks like there is some Schipperke in him or might be one with the tail not docked . I have two of them and they got the energy also. The face look exactly like mine.

Can your local animal control or vet check if he has been micro-chipped?

That's the next step. Can't just drop him off somewhere at random-- I don't have the heart for that --so he's got a temporary home in the backyard until probably Tuesday when I can get him into a shelter or something to scan for a chip.

If there is no chip, and walks around the neighborhood don't help, then you could try the nearest PetSmart of PetCo and see if he has shot records there. Are you active in a Church? Someone there might want to take him if you cannot locate the owner. SightHunter07 got her dog at the Church parking lot. A Church member had puppies she was giving away, and we ended up with a half Chihuahua and half Dachshund mix that loves to be in your lap. She is the friendliest dog you could ask for, and she only barks when someone is outside.

Please find him a good home if you can't keep him, Panzercat. We humans are their only hope; it is why they instinctively love us. It is in their genes.
You can probably guess I am a dog guy. Have two, want five, but we are getting ready to move ...

I understand completely. Wife never grew up with pets, but I couldn't just perform a drop-off. We found a lost/adoption forum for the area and found a nice lady willing to take him in. We're pretty confident he found a nice home. He's a nice pup and deserves it. Thanks all.

If I didn't have four already I would have taken him in a minute.

That's great to hear. Had to put down my Burkha last year, one of the hardest things I've ever had to do. It won't be 'til this fall before I can even consider taking on the chore of raising another pup, but that doesn't keep me from checking 'em out. :) Last night we were visiting an older couple that is dog sitting a mixed breed bitch that their son is looking for another home for. She nearly had me won in spite of what my brain says... :-D

Anyway, glad to hear the lil' guy has a good place to stay.

He appears to have "pricked" ears.

Cattle dogs and Kelpies share a similar trait.

Pretty much always sign of a "keeper".

If you can't keep him yourself, give somebody worthwhile the opportunity.
