Recent aquisition:

Post by M. M. Wright »

Traded for this 1917 S&W last week-end. A new set of reduced power springs really helped clean up the action especially after I noticed it had the wrong hammer spring and I replaced that. Got it, several full moon clips, holster and a new box of 45 Auto Rim. Whoever cut the barrel to 3 1/2" knew what he was doing. Very handy.

Very nice revolver. Good for you, ...though I'm some jealous! Love the 1917's, especially so if they're shooters rather than collectables.

Nice catch ! I like that Nickle finish, too !

Once upon a time, I had a blued commercial 1917 in .45 Colt, with NY State Police markings - I remember it shot very nicely.

Good Luck with yours !

Did they come nickled or did someone do it later?

I had a smith clean it really good, changed the front sight to something I could see. and I changed the grips. It's one of my favorites. The trigger is unbelievable.

I've thought about some kind of a miracle coating, but I just can't bring my self to change it's look.

They never came in nickel for military purposes, but they made the '17 for many years for civilian purchase, so it's possible. I'm not a hardcore S&W guy so I couldn't say for sure. It's the only non-blued/parked M1917 I can remember seeing (and I've seen a few dozen in person and hundreds in photos).

Believe it to be a non-factory nickel job. S&W didn't/doesn't plate the hammer and trigger on their factory plated models. Of course, you can never say never when it comes to S&W. About the time you say never about a Smith, a one of a kind something or other might pop up and make you out a liar. Only a factory letter would prove it original or not. A waste of money in my opinion, save the cash for for ammo or reloading supplies for it. That's what I would do. Let us know how it shoots, ...when we get a warm enough spell around these parts to do some of that.

Why do we care if it's factory or not? It's an altered, shooter grade revolver ...and a fine one at that! Wish it were mine.

I'm sure the barrel has been cut and the piece nickle plated. They even cut off the lanyard ring and left the little piece filling the hole in the butt. 4 digit SN and I put those checkered grips on it in place of a pair of Pachmayrs. Will order a Tyler "T" grip adapter today. I just think the look of the checkered grips and the adapter makes it "look right". Maybe a few shots down range today. She locks up tight though the barrel is rather dark. We'll see.

One of my mom's neighbors has a Luger her husband brought back from WW II. It's one of the most common, late war versions. It's in excellent condition. But, like so many others in the 50s, he had sent it off to be chromed/nickeled. It's a very nice job. All the markings are still plainly visible. It ruined the collector value of it, but at least it was a model that didn't have a lot of collector value to start with. It would still be a very nice shooter.
