The Holy Grail Of Colt Belly Guns

Post by Sixgun »

Yes, as defined by John Taffin in his latest "Campfire Tales" article in th latest issue of Guns Magazine.

John has this old Colt that looks just like mine. He even has a old box of 45 Colt ammo that's in the same condition as mine. :D

Some years back, John did indeed rob me of a very rare 4" Smith and Wesson 1950 Target in 44 Special, but while I do miss the gun sometimes, I knew it could not have gone to a better home. John's likes and mine mirror each others. I have seen pictures of it that John has used in his articles in "Guns", "American Handgunner" and in the annual "Gun Digest".

Good 'ole Terry Murbach asked me once if John knew I had this Colt "slip gun", that very well is most likely the very Colt that Elmer Keith tested out on his ranch back in 1928. It's a somewhat long story, but John describes it very well in his article.

My many thanks to John Taffin for his many years of excellent writing from which I have learned a great deal. As far as I am concerned, John started where Elmer Keith left off. I have the books from both of these fine, exceptional, and thoroughly well knowledgable students of the revolver.

Thanks John, you have helped a great many people become great revolver shooters and the hand loading of the cartridges that feed them......and NO!, you are not getting my Triplelock Target. :D ------Sixgun

That's really cool Jack! How does it shoot? Looks like it might be tricky.

You should start writing articles, then I could say I've met someone famous! :D

Dang! I should'a got that picture of us autographed. :D

Just bustin on ya a little bud. Real neat Colt though. It's neat to be able to have something Elmer Keith used.
Thanks for the pics.

Yea guys, I'm not quite sure what it is, but some things look better when they have a 260 grain Lyman/Keith bullet traveling 900 fps at them/it--.....even with this 2 and 1/2" barrel, I'm sure the velocity will still be 825 :D --------6

Jay--(Old Win.)......looking forward to your visit.......we will do it right this time........play, shoot, talk, tell lies, liquid refreshments, wheel and deal.....you know...make a weekend out of it. Bring your buds...........life is short....do it right!---------6

Now, if we could talk a truck driving Texas guy into the fun, we would be set for life....hear that Griff???.......or for that matter, any guy who likes to have fun...your all invited. :D

You bet bud!

My wife is looking at an April visit to her Aunts I think. No hard date yet but when I get one I will let you know Six.

Looking forward to another visit bud. They moved my son's cutter to Virgina so he at least got somewhere he could shoot but he won't be close by.

You can count on me for a visit though. :D

Good idea! 8) Maybe some of the other levergunners can visit to. I would love to go this spring or early summer. We can plan it as we go.

Hey Jack Sr.....famous means you have money......I have incredible luck in finding neat old guns...dont know what you would call that except maybe I do have that giant funnel in the sky that drops all the good stuff at my back door.

Hope to catch up with you too....its going to be a trying year for me as The Gunny is moving north come June. --Jack Jr.

Any Terry......I also have several 44 Spl. and 44-40 New Frontiers and barrels are all .428 with cylinder throats at .430...They shoot great but.......my "bestest" shooting Colts is one 1st gen 38-40......the one I'm holding in the picture above and the 3rd. gen 38-40's in 5 and 1/2 and 7 and 1/2. They really shoot!----------6

six..., You're still famous. :D
Your post has inspired me to go to my library and get out the 3 Elmer Keith books I have. I am fortunate enough to own the 1st Edition of SIXGUN CARTRIDGES & LOADS.

Elmer dedicated To My Friend S. HAROLD CROFT I never noticed that before.

SInce it has been probably 15 years since I cracked open any of them, this week I am going to spend some time going through them once again. I think I'll start with Sixgun Cartridges and Loads followed by Sixguns then Hell I Was There.

Is Gunny moving to Ridgway?
