NEW Lever - Ok, it's short, and on top...
But it sure IS PRETTY!
Thanks Steve! TTN clone of the 1878 Colt scattergun... 26" tubes and pretty case colors... unlike the 20 coachgun version I've been using in cowboy action for the past year or so...
So, I have a choice... I can give it its maiden voyage tomorrow... or go to a Cowboy Silhouette match tomorrow... and wait to shoot it on Sunday! Oh, the agony!!

Looks like it would be a dandy quail and rabbit gun too.

I've got the short barrel one. I really wish they would offer barrel sets so I could get the longer tubes and throw them on and have two guns in one.
Re: NEW Lever - Ok, it's short, and on top...
Yep, she's got a lever alright. that makes it a levergun.

Re: NEW Lever - Ok, it's short, and on top...
Griff,
That thing reminds me of my grandfather's old Stevens double hammer that is sitting in my safe. He shot it loose decades ago. I used to use it for pheasants and ducks when I was in high school, but it got a little sketchy to run even with low brass loads. Your gun got me to thinking and I looked them up on the Cimarron web page. Not much info there. What does it weigh? What are the chokes in it? Are the chokes fixed or screw-ins? How's the action? Are they rough as a cob?... That's a phrase my grandad used. Do they require a little work to get them to run smoothly? What can you tell me? I like the case hardening. Did it come like that or did 7.62 do it for you? Thanks.
By the way, are you based in Amarillo?

I'll jump in and answer a few questions. First, they are heavy. Tank heavy. Well built and nobody shoots them loose in cowboy action shooting. Second, the action is REALLY smooth on these. I was surprised.superchicken wrote:Griff,

I don't know anything about the chokes on the long barrel, so I will let somebody else answer that.

Thanks, ND. The post got me to thinking about hunting geese and ducks with a hammer gun like my Grandad did before he became an A-5 man. Tank heavy is okay for the blind, but these days I need to be able to shoot steel. I use heavi-shot on some things, but its pricey. Somehow I doubt that thing has screw-ins.

Hmmm... Looks like CZ makes a double hammer with screw-ins. I like the old style stock on the Cimarron though. It's a dead ringer for the old Stevens I've got in the safe.

Re: NEW Lever - Ok, it's short, and on top...
Griff's new SXS started out as an all blue 26" hammer-gun patterned after the original Colt 1878 SXS. Imported first, by TTN now by Cimarron. It is a really close copy of the 1878, too. I've actually used some of these parts to repair originals.
The updates are 3" long forcing cone chambers and White laboratory proofed to 40,000. So, they should hold up well. I'm not sure if they will shoot steel, though. It is definately a heavy gun. But, for CAS it works to your advantage defeating recoil and getting back on target. As for chokes they are fixed. The 20" version is Cyl/Cyl. I was told that this 26" is imp/mod. But, I can't document that. With the barrel thickness adding screw chokes would be easy.
As for what was done to Griff's, first it was disassembled, the parts refitted where needed then the reciever and related parts was sent to Mike Hunter for the color-case work. Mikes color-case work is top notch.
Once it came back the action was re-assembled using wire springs. One of the weak links with this gun is the old style "V" springs. The "V" type sear springs and the top latch spring are notorious for breaking. The wire springs eliminate this problem. The chambers are polished and the mouths slightly chamfered for easier faster reloads. The last item addressed is for right handed CAS shooters. I reverse the triggers, front trigger on the left and the rear trigger on the right. With the triggers setup like this the front trigger is on the left side and once it is pulled the finger can easily slip straight back to the rear which is now on the right side. You don't have to reach around the front trigger to get to the back trigger.
I think this is a faster setup than even the single trigger guns because you don't have to let up on the trigger to get a reset required of the single trigger gun. This setup can make it seem almost like both trigger were pulled at the same time.
I am out of the 26" guns but still have some 20".

One of the other nice things about these Colt 1878 clones is how close the hammers are together. Unlike the Rossi, CZ or Stevens guns, the hammers curve slightly inward placing them close together over the action. This makes cocking them with just the thumb or web of the hand very easy, even if you have small hands.
And although they come with a "spur" near the end of the hammer, Steve's versions (& my coach gun model) have been "de-spurred". So there's no rasping of the skin if you just rake your hand or thumb over the hammer.

True that. Plus, because the CAS game requires we start with the gun staged with the action open but the hammers can be cocked, if you inadvertently close the action as you pick it up the top latch lever will still swing under the hammer to allow you to open the action without having to lower the right side hammer. Another time saver if needed.

Shot it in my first match today... it didn't miss a target! Well, if you consider the air above one of the targets as its target... The flopped triggers will take some acclimatizing... uh... are they hard to switch back?

The switching part is easy. The hard part is getting to them. This gun doesn't have a thru the buttstock draw bolt. The 5 screws that attaches the trigger plate traps the stock to the receiver.Griff wrote:Shot it in my first match today... it didn't miss a target! 1st Superchicken, nope, I'm in Rockwall, east of Dallas. And, there's no markings as to choke.
Steve, got the triggers switched back... as you said, wasn't hard... but disassembling it was still a little intimidating, not knowing how to really do it! Didn't realize that I didn't have to actually remove the hammers! All back together and seems to work!
This way I don't feel like I have to change all 4 of my other side-x-sides!!!

superchicken you know you can get grandpa's shot gun fixed. Most of the time it is either the hinge pin is worn or the lug on the barrels. neither is a major undertaking. Just thought I should mention it. Tom

No... not much could be done to refresh its looks without spending a LOT more money! The Holt's in the back of the safe... where it won't get broken by being used! Repairs were quite extensive (read expensive also), but those Damascus barrels are not really suited to smokeless...Sixgun wrote:Griff,

If you remember what kind of condition it was in, you know how loose it was. Let me tell ya, 86er made it lock up like a bank vault! It's truly like it were NEW!
For BP, I have no hesitation using it... smokeless... not with "laminated" barrels! Plus truly, I need to measure the chambers... it might be a 2-½" chamber instead of a 2-¾". Not a problem... as:

CRe: NEW Lever - Ok, it's short, and on top...
Griff,
I like that! Sure is nice to see an old wall hanger shooting again.
I'm still having a hard time believing I used to shoot that gun on a somewhat regular basis. There was this "old advice" back in the day, and I have no idea who said it but it goes like this, "Whenever you shoot an old double barrel hammer gun, use low brass shotgun shells."
So......that's what I did......yea......ain't easy being half Italian.-----6
