I wish someone would make a reproduction Colt long action pump rifle for I would surely buy one, but so far the short action ones are all that are being built. -Tutt

Along with an original 1876, the large frame Lightning is another one I never have been able to latch onto in shooter condition. They are either junk or pristine.

What could be cooler than hunting with an original "big 50"!

Doc, as you know, just a handful were made in 50 caliber. Do you shoot it?

I bought a repro ( high # Chappy) near 3 years back fromm CDNN for $688 plus shipping. They no longer have any. Only problem with a 1876 is the max cartrige length of 2.6 inches.
I found 3F to duplicate the origonal loading and to be the most accurate load. With 3F there is no fouling on the brass exterior or back into the chamber. I have read since that 3F was the loading some companies used. In new brass with 3F 86 grains will enter the case without bulging it. I use one cereal box wad under the powder. At 100 yards off crossticks it will touch most rounds. At 200 yards it is easy to smack a 6 inch round gong.
I use a 350 grainer which out penetrates the 300 grain .515's and is more accurate to boot. If you call Accurate Arms they have my 5477 info on record. But 3F is still the most accurate load and does 1465 fps 350 grainer out of my 26 inch barrel meassured at 15 feet. I would not hessitate to hunt any critter with this rifle.

What is the rate of twist on that barrel? It would be interesting to hear what Colt used compared to Winchester, Uberti and Chappy, and what bullets work best. FWIW, My Uberti 1876 .50-95 does well with Swiss 2F and a Rapine 350 bullet.

i dont know the rate of twist , but i will have to check it. i hope it shoots the same loads i have for my 1876; hopefully will find out soon.

That 6 inch gong would be a dead critter if you were shooting at anything but a metal gong. I see folks at the range with scoped bolt action rifles and 7mm Magnum, .338 Winchester Magnum, and other magnum cartridges who cannot shoot their rifles as well as that. Those old BP cartridges were plenty accurate.
