357 for deer?

Post by Goat »

I am likely opening a can of worms but I would like to know your ACTUAL EXPERIENCES using the 357 on deer sized game . I have killed deer and a hog with the 357. I know what works for me but would like to hear what has and has not worked for you. Do you believe that cast or jacketed bullets work best and why. I will be using these in a newly acquired older model Marlin 1894C. I think that there was someone on the old forum that had lots of experience with the 357 on deer. I think that his bullet of choice was the remington 158gr. soft point.

2 #150ers last year. 207 grain LBT style cast.

Flipped 'em both on their sides. Both got up and ran 25 yds and piled up. Very clear blood trails in tall grass.

Killed a whitetail buck last season. One shot through the shoulders from about 60 paces, dropped in his tracks. 180 gr. cast bullet at 1800 fps. Bullet was cast from the LEE 358-180-RF group buy mold with wheelweights.
