OT-RELOADING-9MM RIMMED?

Post by 1894cfan »

I know these were made back in the day when S&W came out with the 547 9mm revolver. I would like to find some for my Ruger 9MM Speed 6. Anybody here know where I can find some? BTW, anybody know what they were called? TIA

You mean the "9mm Federal?" Wooo.. I wouldn't know where to look.

EDIT: This guy http://www.ammo-one.com is selling them for $2.50 a round.

I've got LOTS of half moon clips + a bunch of 1/3 moon clips + 21 full moon clips, so I'm covered there. I guess I'm just being lazy, it's a pita to load and unload them suckers!

One can always take the other PITA route. Purchase 38 S&W brass, shorten them to the correct length, load using standard 9MM dies, fire, repeat as necessary.

At $2.50 a round for the "real stuff", PPpastordon's PITA route makes the best since!!!

Don have you done that or are you just theorizing? I've tried to do that with similar things and was never able to get the web sized down enough.

.38 S&W brass trimmed to .756" works fine in mine. A 9mm Lee speed die is what I use. Too long and they drag on the recoil shield. Too short and they go snap. I use standrd 9mm luger load data. They also work in some of my .357's. Most of the time I use 9mm ammo without the clips and pick them out by hand. It is easier to pick them out of the chambers than it is to get the spent cases out of the clips. No misfires as yet with unsupported regular 9mm loads.

I use a Lyman case trimmer myself, and really like it!

Trimmed .38 S&W brass ain't AR brass. It headspaces on the mouth. If your ruger missfires with unclipped 9mm loads then it might not work with trimmed .38S&W.

The .756" I mentioned worked in my gun but maybe too short in yours. This is going to require some trial and error. Keep in mind the trimmed brass is going to be thicker at the mouth than 9mm brass. Any visible bullet runout bulge may hinder chambering. Start bullet as straight as you can to minimize this or use beveled base bullets.

All in all I had both success and fun getting there but now that the novelty of having rimmed 9mm cases wore off, I just use unclipped 9mm loads and pick out the brass one or two at a time with thumb and forefinger nails.

Thanks for that bit of info, Ray. That's why I only got 100 rds. of 38 S&W brass ordered from Midway. Somebody else posted on Marlinowners/reloading that 38 Short Colt would be a better deal because it doesn't need trimming at all.
I'll see what happens when I start playing around with the brass.
