If I were looking for a scope for a 32-20....

Post by Tycer »

I have bought an old 32-20 rifle with 3/4" rings D&Td into the barrel and receiver. If I were looking for a scope for it what would you recommend? Redfield 4x? Weaver 330? Tasco 4x? Something newer?
Kind regards,
Tycer

Leupold, Burris or Redfield had a 3/4" scope that was really nice. Cant remember which one had it but they were made in 70's. The front and rear lenses were 25 to 30 mm's or so. Something else to look up tonite from my past. :!:
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

The rings are too close together. Is there any advantage to the longer tubes?

There may be one that I'm unaware of, but I've got several little shorty scopes that are nice, especially on a petite gun like most 32-20's. Burris, Bushnell, Tasco. All work well. Get good crosshairs you like and I do like a bigger objective than simply 'tube diameter'.

I put a 1.5-4.5 Swift compact on my 1894CL .32-20 (Mainly because it was free) and I really like it so far. The lower power has a very wide field of view and gathers a lot of light.

Hobie's suggestion of a 2.5x would be a really good choice too. If you are going for a "vintage" look the older El Paso made Weavers are still good scopes. I have a couple and pick them up whenever I find a good deal. Older Redfield's or Leupold scopes can still be found on ebay and GB in good shape too.

You'll like the little .32 WCF, The one I have is fast becoming my favorite all around lever gun. They are a lot of fun and cheap to load and will do a lot more than I would have thought it capable of.

I generally load mine with 115 gr. LFP's but I was given a full box of Sierra 90 gr. JHP's that I'm going to try out too.

FWIW, I prefer older/vintage scopes with older/vintage rifles - RF scopes suffice, but the Weaver J-series ( J-2.5 or J-4) have much longer eye relief (they were often used on CF rifles).

The Weaver 330 was an even earlier longer eye relief scope, and would do just fine - except IIRC they were made before the days of sealed scopes with anti-fogging gas (nitrogen, AFAIK) inside.

There was a guy on here not to long ago with a 330 on his rifle, he did not seem inclined to part with it,
though I advised him to do so.

I've been looking at ebay prices on the 330c  Might just have to suffer through the Lyman #1 that's on it and sell the 330. Seems I'm in a selling kind of way theses days.
