Post by Blaine »

I got this one off FleaBay....Has the guys initials on the back of the sheath...can't imagine why he would get rid of it....If I needed one for such a purpose, I'd use this one....It looks like death

My favorite ... "working tool"... is the original Loveless Guardian. No dramatic bolster, just light, solid & FAST... and almost impossible to find any more. I'll bleed out before I lose mine...
Image

This one is good for intimidation and as a small short sword... Fits well on LBE...

Never really cared for the "wings" on that variant of the Guardian. Good find though. Hard to find a better "working" knife...

If the initials on the sheath are "DG", it's stolen! Oh, and the sheath has to have some saltwater damage on it also. Carried mine thru VN, and several years as a cop before it got "mis-appropriated"... during a lax moment of mine. NEVER leave anything in a squad car after you get off duty! Lost that knife and a rechargeable Streamlight that way... both had my initials... and the no good @$#%&$'s I worked with had the decency to even ask...

Looks like a smaller version of Sykes Fairbairn that old Col. Rex Applegate held in such high esteem.

Nice! -- I have one that is similar except w/out the serrations -- carried it as a backup knife when I was in the service --- it has more of a "rode hard and put away wet" look than yours

I have one of those too. Always rode in my boot, long before we were allowed to carry. It's around here some where. Forgot all about it.

I have a Gerber dagger just like yours Streetstar. I bought it new around 35 years ago. I haven`t even looked at it for probably 25 years. Mine is as new. What are they worth in perfect, unsharpened outside of the factory, condition???
At one point I was going to collect one of each Gerber knife made but like Winchester commemorative`s that soon became impossible to keep up with and I didn`t like all of them anyway. :? :? :?

I've got one of the smaller Guardian models. It still comes out to play from time to time. Darned thing really holds an edge.

The Gerber was an improved Fairbairn, before Applegate got with Boker and made the even newer version.

Interesting note, up until at least the mid 70's British paratroops were still carrying the Fairbairn Sykes. A British demo team put on a show at Torrejon in '76. These guys jumped in full kit. The only thing they changed was that the chute was more maneuverable than the regular one.

A little Gerber history....
The 60 & 70's era Mk II &MkI were made from L6 saw blade steel and chrome plated to fight rust. Mine are from the late 70's era and are made from 440C, which was the standard steel of the day for Gerber. Pete Kershaw was the vice pres at the time, then he struck out on his own and founded Kershaw knives.
Early MkII's had a bent blade so they would lay flat against the leg when tucked into a boot and not hang up on the vegetation.
Al Mar is sometimes credited with designing the MKII, but is not the case.
-Brian
P.S. There are those of us that weep at the thought of Gerber today.
