Mescalero, I want your opinion.

IIRC, you have extensive experience with optics.
I would like to know your opinion on levergun optics:
1) What power and dimensions do you recommend for 225 yards and under.
2) "......."600 yards and under
3) What current manufacturers do you prefer and why.
4) What bases and rings do you prefer and why.
5) What reticle do you prefer for hunting? Battle?
6) Any other thing you might like to opine on regarding optics.

Sir, the floor is yours please!
Kind regards,
Tycer

More input info would be helpful: but here goes. Remember I am used to shooting scopes.
#1)If you really are serious about 225 and under you better go 6x at least, you would be surprised how much surface area a xhair covers when you get way out there.
2)10x minimum What are you shooting with a lever at 600?
3) I am at a loss here, I look and don't see anything that appeals to me.
4) Burris steel split rings and bases.
5) Duplex the heavy part helps me center and then go to the fine for precision.
I do not like variables in ANY form and today you are hard presssed to find anything but that.
The more complex you make a scope, the more suseptable it becomes to failure, and small failure become big problems in the shot placement process.
The old Weaver lifetime warranty came because we hammer forged the tube from a steel tube and it was well protected.
That is why I rail against variables, they have created an atmosphere/condition in which we cannot find a decent fixed power scope.
I am not tired, ask me if you need more.

Your .358 BLR and 225 spitzer reminded me of the longest shot I ever made with mine on game.

I didn't have to but I recognized the perfect condition to try, so squeezed one off.

312 yrds down hill, 225 Sierra, 2500fps, 2x7 compact Leupold.

I don't, but I remember I had no problem centering the cross-hair on TOP of his shoulder's, the bullet struck a 1/2 inch left of the spine right in front of the hips, took out a kidney , liver, lungs and drilled the heart dead center, I have the bullet, it fell out in my hand as I drained the chest cavity.

Reminds me that I found a Savage 99 in .358 Win. in my gunsmiths junk pile.
Have to get back to working on that.
