New Single Action!

Post by Griff »

Of the semi-auto variety:
Image

This is another Taylor's Tactical 1911 clone from Armscor. The other one has been perfect, so... I thought I'd get another to use as a backup (or maybe primary) SASS Wild Bunch gun. Figure I'll replace the arched mainspring housing on the gun I won with a flat one. I consisdered one with a lanyard loop on the bottom... but having smacked my palm on one before, I'm not anxious to repeat that experience!

The trigger needs a little cleaning up, but feels like it'll smooth right up. A range report will have to wait till I get back home... unless... naw, I want to use ammo that I know.

Great pistol. Has the Wolf in GI/Sheep clothing look. What loads you going to break it in with.
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Ok Griff, you can have that. A 1911, in my opinion, is the only semi-auto that exists.

There can be many ways of saying something, and often, if wrong it can give offense where none was intended. I had a Cuban instructor in college for an advanced Spanish Lit course that would say something innocent (for him) and one guy in particular would visibly have to fight to control his impulse to attack the prof.!!! I finally asked him what it was that set him so on edge... it was the instructor's inflection on the word plantain. Even totally out of context, that word was "gay" to this guy... and he was takin' it personal. No wonder street fights in densely populated, yet diverse hispanic areas are so common. Yep, few of the other cops I worked with in SoCal ever got that, community relations they call it nowadays...

I find the factory grips to be horrendous, so I put these poly-ivory Hogues on it. I haven't received the checkering tools yet, but intend to do a double diamond pattern @ 20 LPI to match the mainpring housing. Tho' I may leave a panel open to put my first unit's logo on the right panel... but... after so many years... maybe not.

I did intall a lighter magazine release spring... but other than that, it's stock. Shot 2 mags thru it yesterday... overall, I'm more than satisfied.

My rigs tend toward the utilitarian! :P

Top to bottom: my old duty rig, Safariland holster, Balco mag pouch and Tex Shoemaker belt... old stuff; a new Safariland tactical holster my son just bought for his foray into 3-gun matches; my old Bianchi Blackwidow holster I used for PC work, and a re-pop GI holster to replace my old black navy unit that gave up the ghost last year.
Not shown are my thoroughly disgusting Milt Sparks "summertime special" (almost 30 years old, and been everywhere, back again and LOOKS it!), and a Blackhawk on a belt slide that with my new, rotund figure is easier to draw from than the Blackwidow, has no retention capability and, has no photogenic properties whatsoever!!!

Aww, cmon Griff --- you need a matched set of Punisher grips for your 1911's !  --- for field duty I carry either of these in a Bianchi cordura GI holster (the one they made for the 92SF ) - they fit great and are well protected

Plus with grips like this -- the forest critters know I mean business -- one glimpse and they are intimidated enough to surrender, I don't have to shoot 'em

(I know these aren't everybody's cup a tea, but I get a kick out of 'em anyway )

1st lines of checkering on poly-ivory grips. Got the first one a little closer to the screw than I intended... but... should still be ok. Now to make a proper jig to hold the work piece while I saw at it!

Thank god you did, though, I was wondering about that. What did you find hard? BTW, you should finish them. Practice makes perfect. So, you might as well see if with some effort you can learn the right technique or jig.

What does the tool look like? Is it the file with straight logitudinal grooves?

You're still not seeing a 1911. The cutout at the back of the trigger guard (the radius) isn't correct (because it's simply an A1 that they omitted a machine step), the safety isn't correct, the hammer isn't correct, the trigger isn't correct, the grip safety isn't correct.

A 1911:

Image

I'm sure they're nice guns and they're getting good functional reviews, but the radius/cutout around the trigger just drives me NUTS, and I also prefer a true flared out 1911-style hammer.

Sorry Griff! I didn't say anything for the longest time, but the keyboard finally got the best of me... I'm glad you like it and I hope you enjoy it for many years!!

Holding the file face perpendicular to the work. As you run the file, say right to left, you have to roll the tool side to side as it moves up, over, then down on the other side of the panel. The single blade file seems easy, but if you get it off of perpendicular, you widen and flatten that groove. And with the two blade (one unserrrated as a "guide", one serrated for cutting), if you don't hold the tool perpendiculare, you'll soon "jump the track!"

But, I'm not admitting defeat just yet! Humbled, for sure, but still willing to give it some more work. The little bit of "fixin'" I've been able to do:
Image
Luckily, this is the right panel... and will not be seen much... but will always serve to remind me how difficult "checkering" can be!

Picture of my work holder and one of the tools:
Image

And Oly, no it ain't really a "clone" of a real 1911, but near as close as I've seen lately.

Looking better!

So, questions,

Is the 1911 vs. 1911A1 merely a collectors/asthetic difference or are there other differences to be concerned with? I just did a brief Internet scout and it seems the A1 was the result of changes were designed to make the gun a little better, after WWI experience.

Is there some other part of the story to know about?

The A1 was brought out in 1924 (IIRC) and yes, was the result of improvements suggested from WWI experience. The two biggies are the lowering of the ejection port and the "finger" cuts at the rear of the trigger. The lowered ejection port allowed for better ejection, and the finger grooves allowed shooters with short fingers to comfortably reach the trigger. The larger grip safety and hammer spur added a measure of protection of "1911 bite" and ease of pulling the hammer back.

Well... I've done some more work, and decided that I really need a LOT more practice, and may NEVER get adequate at checkering... let alone "good"!

Here's the left panel as finished, with the pattern (which I didn't really use for a reference until it was too late:
Image

And what I've got done so far on the right panel:
Image

Since the state championship is coming up, and I'm sorta tired of just carrying my magazines in my back pocket or using an old duty type snap covered mag holders, I ordered two new rigs... Both with 2 double mag holders and a combination shotshell/rifle round belt slide, for "just-in-case!" The first to arrive should look like a lighter version of this rig:
Image

The other rig will be very similar, with slight differences, the chief among which will the rake of the gun:
Image
Here's a pic of the rig I ordered but with the rake above:
Image
In fact, both rigs should be about the color of the bottom rig in this pic.

The rigs are by two different makers, one in FL the other in TX. The guy in FL had a lull in his schedule and the rig should be finished next week. The other wasn't quite so free, but has committed to finishing up by the 16th, so I can have it the 20th in time for the match. I'm planning on using one rig, and my son the other...

And that discussion might be as heated as to who is going to use what gun!!! Lookin' forward to gettin' home, trying out the rigs, loadin' some additional ammo, and if my luck holds, a couple of days of practice. I know I won't win anything for my shootin'... but another clean match pin would be great!!!
