Greeting from Texas

Post by Sigmar »

Just a quick hello so I won't be accused of lurking. Been away from guns since the late 70's early 80's. Since I met my wife I got back into the game seeing as she had me outgunned. Now own a few AR's, 454 SRH, 1911, and some other odds and ends. Looking to add a 454 lever to compliment the revolver and my wife likes the lever so its a done deal once I find one. Looking to learn as much as I can.

Welcome! There are a few here with 454 leverguns that will throw in their two cents. I've never had one, but I am on the prowl for a 480 levergun.

Oh man, you're just a few minutes from the Stockyard district and all that great chow! You've got me dreaming of the elk sliders at Tim Love's Lonesome Dove.

Good thinking! I have one of those 454's, though I am not tough enough to shoot full-power loads on a regular basis: I'll save those for chasing after elk or bear. What I enjoy most of that Rossi persuasion is the 357. This is a kick in the pants to shoot and since there are a bunch of them floating around you might "accidentally" have one follow you home while you are searching for a 454. Don't chase it away! I'll bet the wife will like it.

And welcome to the stump, Sigmar.

I'm thinking the SRH is a Ruger Super Redhawk.

Super Redhawks are nice guns, if not as 'pretty' as the regular Redhawks...

I have a Rossi .454 Casull levergun, and though I don't use it much, it has functioned flawlessly with fairly 'stout' factory loads. Think of it as a short-action version of a .45-70, and some will argue that it isn't fully the equal, I doubt the elk or bad guy on the receiving end would have a clue as to the difference.

The Rossi .454 is 'maxed out' just like the S&W 29 is 'maxed out' with .44 Mag, but you don't see a whole lot of S&W owners trading them in or giving them up for that reason.

The 'DRC' (if you can't find it PM me and I'll find the link, but it's mentioned elsewhere on the forum) levergun is available in .454 Casull AND .500 S&W, and is probably a far better levergun than the Rossi. Don't have one but on my wish-list (4x the cost of the Rossi).
