OT - Hogue vs. Pachmayr

Post by RSY »

I'm curious as to what folks' preference is regarding rubber replacement revolver grips. I used to be a Hogue disciple, but about a year ago I really started taking a shine to the Pachmayrs. I will say that I still prefer the Hogues for my autos, though.

I go with what fits my hands the best. I have had Pachmyers in the past.
I prefer custom wood grips above all others.

OK, old timers, who was in LE in the west who remembers Fuzzy Farant?

As bsarider said. First wood grips and than Pachmayr for me. Do not like the finger grips they don't fit me well. Like the Presentation style of Pachmayr and whenever possible the Pachmayr Compact.
My first choice; Herrett Roper. Second, Eagle Classic or Eagle Rosewood.

Have both.Pacs on a S&W686 and Hogue on NM Blackhawk .45 Colt.
The 4 5/8 Ruger has quite a bit of recoil with upper level loads and the Hogue, being of softer material, helps alot. But it sure looks weird.
The Smith looks right at home with the Pacs on it.
Best case scenario would be handle both. Personally,I like both brands.
The Hogues are less expensive.

I've experimented with both....and S&W wears Hogue; while the Rugers wear Pachmayr.

Hogue's wood grips were okay until I bought a set of Herrett's Ropers but I wouldn't be caught dead with rubber grips on a sixgun. Especially on a single action!!!

I used both as well, and right now have handguns sporting both - but none on single-actions!!!

I do like the Hogue "Bill Jordan" wood grips on my S&W Model 629. On my auto's, they are wearing Pac's... :)

Pachmeyers for me, have them on most all my wheel guns and on a hi-power. Just like how they feel, but must admit that is based on trying the Houges years ago and I think they have improved since then.

I've come full circle and back to wood. I had Pachmayrs on most everything but have gotten it off. BTW, I've got some good condition used Pachmayr grips available for good prices...
Sincerely,

Hobie

Wood only... unless integral like on my SP101.

Can't imagine having Rubber on a Big Bore. Saw what happens to a palm when a full-house .454 load gets touched off on one when not wearing gloves.

Ouch.

Give me smooth wood Bisleys.

I use rubber on double actions (except one K22). The bone a the base of my shooting hand thumb won't tolerate anything hard on the backstrap. Have a real nice set of K frame elk stags on a S&W M19 that I can barely shoot 38 specials comfortably with.

I like the Pachmayr Gripper Decelerators on S&W J frames.

Use the Hogue 500s (with the covered backstrap) on round butt N and L frames.

K frames get standard pachmayrs with covered backstrap.

Don't use rubber on single actions -- I find they abrade the hand and over torque the wrist, plus they just don't look right to me.

You just have to try different grips until you find what works for you.

FWIW,

Paul

Scott,

I use Pachmayrs on my two S&W double actions. Specifically the Gripper type with the finger groves.

I've shot other peoples DA's with Hogues and the finger grove spacing isn't right for my hands. They always seem to me to be designed for guys like Bill Jordan with huge hands.

I would love to have nice wood grips on my DA's like I do on my Single Actions, but unfortunately I have the exact same problem Paul105 does. I've been bruised in that spot by every double action revolver I've shot with wooden grips.

So, alas  I have ugly rubber grips on my Smiths.
