I need some shooters in Texas ...SUN Feb 17th

Post by 86er »

Today the President of a rifle company called me himself and asked me to analyze, review and report on one of his company's lever action rifles. I review shotguns all the time as part of my job at The Upland Almanac magazine. For those reviews, the readers like that I provide free ammo and targets to 5 random shooters and then I let them list their likes and dislikes. In the review I quote at least 3 of them, whether good or bad. I think the best and fairest way to evaluate this rifle is to do the same thing. So if anyone can commit to a range date before the second week of Feb I will supply the rifle, ammo and targets at my range or Krodle Kountry (yes I just volunteered you Ricky - Thanks  ).

Also, I would appreciate any feedback or comments from you regarding what factors, features and characteristics you would like to see scrutinized on a lever action rifle. I've not done a lot of rifle reviews for publication so I don't want to overlook something that is important to the consumer.

When this project is finished, about the end of February I'll post the whole thing here among other places.

Thanks

Depending where you are in Texas, I'm probably in.

I've worked for a manufacturer, shot just about every type of rifle on the planet from .22 to .416, nearly every military arm on the planet at some point or at least handled them, and also hunt a bit, so I have most of your bases covered.

I'm not just a range/bench shooter.

I'm in Central TX, if you're within 90 miles or so I could probably make it.

I'm not a 'professional', but I know what I like. I'm not totally ignorant about firearms.

I'd be happy to help get some guns dirty using someone else's ammo. Trying something new would be rather cool.

I'll be free any Sunday, Monday, or Tuesday in January or February.

Great! I'll appreciate the more experienced opinions as well as the "average guy" opinion. It makes makes a huge difference to the readers when they can relate to the information! This is not going to be some brand new product or something whiz-bang. I think it is something that is under-rated, under-valued and has not been properly nor fairly reviewed. Thanks

I can swing it if you need someone. If not, no biggie. I'm fairly close and am free most days after noon.

It might be nice if you could find someone like the young lady you took hunting Joe. Didn't she go by the name "Huntress?" Just an added opinion from a lady. :)

He could have a young lady who shot the Merkel Double Rifle that he was testing in 9.3x74 give this a try. She could handle it.

Or you could make a real circus out of the shoot and get Judy Rhodes to come out and participate. :D
She always carries a pocketful of those "I was beat by a girl" pins and enjoys handing them out. She put one on me at an Elm Fork sporting clays shoot several years ago.

Seriously though, remember to have a trigger guage, some good range bags for the table, water or hot coffee depending on the weather, someone to take good pix, etc.

Looks like you got enough volunteers, that's good my wife is still recovering from the last operation. She is doing great but needs me for certain things for a little longer, driving and lifting are still no nos. She should be given her release from her doctor soon and we will be back to normal. What sort of equipment or supplies need to be brought along other than personal gear, eyes, ears etc?

Targets? Chronographs? Cameras? Ammunition?

I hate needing something that I know have but didn't think to bring.

I'm not the right person to answer this because I have a tendency to pack heavy. But if you've got it, bring it! After the testing is done everyone is welcome to stay and shoot whatever they bring with them. If you have a peticular rifle, or load, that you would like use as a side by side comparison that would be welcome. I would also suggest maybe bring a pinic lunch and drinks or something if so inclined. There is a Cajun place near by that's pretty good.

Well... the rifle was there, along with bullets and primered cases, but... not the stuff between the primers and bulelts! Seems as tho' when I moved all the powder out of the house to the reloading shop... so to did the powder in my truck from the last trip out to KrodleKountry!

Many thanks to Joe for providing four guns and plenty of ammo for our shootin' fun! A couple of leverguns that I'd previously had not to many positive things to say, and a couple of shotguns that I'd not had to opportunity to look over and handle. I don't know about anyone else, but... it's always better to handle and actually shoot something before you pass judgement.

For some reason the new Photobucket doesn't automatically resize my pictures to work on this forum. So I have to do it manually... and it's a slow process, so it'll be a while before I post pics of some of the guns and shooting pics.

Great day, Joe thanks for the opportunity to shoot these guns and thanks to Ricky for the place to do it. Weather was great (well except for the wind). Was nice to meet other forum members.
This provided us an opportunity to run these guns for accuracy, function and feel and balance. Always nice to shoot and burn up someone else's ammo. I think we did that.
