Marlin 1894C 357 mag range report

Post by cvarcher »

This is at 25 yards seated with open iron sights
Fed Am Eagle 158gr SJSP chronied-1750fps --7/8" 5 shot group (1/2" 4 out of 5 shots.
Magtech 158gr SJSP chronied 1660fps---7/8" 5 shot 3/4" 4 out of 5 shots.
13gr 2400/Rem 158gr SJSP--------------1" 5 shot group
I will chrony the 13gr 2400. weights higher and lower of 2400 widened the group. This gun loves American Eagle factory ammo and it would be wise to duplicate this ammo with reloads.

Did it feed and cycle ok? That's some good shooting for that little rifle and Iron sights....

I will have to look at the Fed Am Eagle - mine isn't great with anything yet.

It's nice when a gun likes American Eagle, being as it's one of the cheaper brands, huh?

Nice report. My Rossi like AE 158 sp's too, I took a doe with them a few years back.

If my experience is any indicator you'll need about 15 grains of 2400 to reach 1750FPS, maybe a little more with the 18.5" barrel, my Rossi wears a 20" tube.

You might try L'il gun, it'll give you the velocity woth less pressure.
I only just started playing with it last fall & havent settled on a load yet but if I recall 16 grains gave me 1500 fps. Theres not much data for it in rifles but looking at Hogdons pistol data it generates ALOT less pressue for equal velocity.

16gr of LilGun gives me right at 1800fps under a 180gr cast boolit in my 20" Rossi...

Cycled just fine with those rounds.

Yes, AM Eagle were reaonalbe at about $15/ 50 . This is the reason I chose to go to this caliber instead of the 3030 which is about $15/ 20 rounds. Holds more ammo and makes a bigger hole. Ive heard about Lil Gun being a great powder for this.Have to try it.
