Spencer Carbine question................

Post by DarryH »

Close enough to be called a "lever action" ????

I have a real puzzle here.
1st....no pictures. Gun belongs to a good friend with no computer.

Serial number is wayyy high..........1056XX..........most have 5 digit numbers.
Marked as made in Mass. by Spencer Repeating Arms.
Appears to be 56.56 rimfire.
No cut-off.
The number 2 on the buttstock.

Anyone see a Spencer with this high of serial number??????????

Company had barrels and guns made by Burnside about 1865. I have never seen a Burnside/Spencer with
a serial number over 5 digits.
Spencer ceased production in 1868, and was sold in December 1868 to Fogarty Repeating Rifle Company.
Some Spencers were made in Belgium.
Guns were sold to France, Brazil, and other countries after the Civil War (War of Northern Agression)

This is NOT a reproduction.

A read that up to about 200,000 Spencers were made, but only about 46000 before the end on the Civil War. (War of Northern Agression)

Any and all help appreciated.
Good Shootin!!

I just dug my Spencers out of the safe to check the serial numbers. One of them is a model 1867 with a serial number 1022XX. It's a 56-50, 5 groove rifling with a Lane extractor.

Thanks for the help.
I also signed up on the Spencer forum.
I have been a member of CasCity for a long time, but had not been active for several years.
My old log-in was still good.

Thanks again.
