Yea, Go Ahead, Call Me "Mr. Ingot"

Fellow Guncranks,
A while ago I changed my name to "Mr. Wheelweight". After a trip to the courthouse its been changed again. This time its "Mr. Wheelweight Ingot" or in short, "Mr. Ingot". Remember that huge pile of wheelweights I had? Well, I completed the massive meltdown to ingots. Out of 10 buckets of wheelweights I managed to finish with 1285 ingots. With an average weight of 14 ounces for each ingot, the final sum is 1124 pounds. These wheelweights, in addition to 300 pounds of pure lead, 115 pounds of 50/50 bar solder, 550 pounds of linotype, and about 40 pounds of babbit, I should have enough for the rest of my daze. (as Frank Marshall would say

) I don't shoot the volume I used to, especially with 44 caliber handguns. Its mostly precision rifle shooting nowadays.

Melting the wheelweights cost me about $75 in propane as I went through 4 full tanks. I used a different method as I usually do. I used to use a two burner propane cast iron stove. This time I borrowed my buddies big stove that puts out a hugh flame and a ice melter/weed killer propane flame thrower that I bought at Harbor Freight for $24. While the heat from the stove is heating from underneath, the flame thrower is heating the top of the lead. I can melt, skim, flux, and pour a pot full of wheelweights in about 20 minutes. 4 potfulls of wheelweights will empty out a 5 gallon bucket. I use an old stainless cooking pot that will hold about 40 pounds of wheelweights.

Its been two weeks of h*ll, a little here and there when I had time. I destroyed a few pairs of pants but that don't bother me as I used my work clothes and the company pays for 'em---great being a Teamster union guy---I'm sure that will irk a few anti-union types.

Nice ingot stash! Makes my little pile look rather meagre. I've still got about 600 pounds of wheel weights I haven't melted down yet, but even then my ingot pile won't come anywhere near close to yours.

Really, its no big deal as 1100 pounds ain't nothin' to an avid caster. In my earlier years I would always keep 2-3 K of lead laying around. I like it because of personal reasons-independence from the bullet makers, the ability to get any rifle/revolver of any caliber smokin' as much as my little heart desires, and how else can you shoot a 45-70 all day for $10?

Nice stash.
I gave up on the propane thing. At $6.00 a gallon in the barbecue cyliners it gets expensive real quick.
I bought a wok burner and run it of the natural gas meter. Heats my 400 sq/ft garage in about 5 min. I use it for curing paint jos on restoration projects, and doubles up for melting lead. Costs less than $1 per propane equivalent gallon.

Dig around that site, they have burners to 160,000btu for. natural gas and propane.

YOU DA MAN! I did spring for the big burner this spring, it came as a fish boiler set up.($30) It made a huge difference over the colman camp stove. I can't compete I only have about 6 five gallon buckets of wheel weights waiting for melting. I have about 150 lbs of ingots which will get me through this year, even though those 230 grainers for the 1911 really eat up the ingots.

My pile isn't near that big and is in linotype ingots. At my age I probably have a lifetime supply.

I used to have a huge smelter and the water cooled ingot mold for linotype. Now days my ingot molds are made from angle iron and I mark the ingots with steel stencils as to their content.

When I had the big smelter I would cast a bullet in a 500 grain .45 mold and alloy the mix until the bullet weighed exactly 500 grains. This way I knew I was close to Lyman no. 2. Didn't have a hardness tester back then.

Good to see those ingots being put to good use. I spent a day melting down some of my wheel weights, but only had about 100 pounds of ingots to show by the end. I still have quite a few five-gallon pails full of wheel weights. Not sure how much ingots I got ..... maybe around 250 pounds worth. Maybe more. Mine are just over 2 pounds each. However, even when all my wheel weights are finally melted into ingots, I still won't beat Sixgun. Factoring out the trash, and left over clips, I'm figuring I'll have around 900 pounds.

Ha! I remember those days. These days, the garage is ALL mine.

I have an impressive pile of raw materials too Jack. If I had half of all that I have turned into bullets I would never have to cast again.

I just paid $24.00 to have three 20 pound propane tanks filled. Around my hometown they want $14 to fill a single tank.

Well, I leave up to my mentor, Jack Sr. to dig up these old posts to which you all know I have to respond. I'm very proud to announce that since I retired I'm getting weirder by the day. Last week I had nothing to do so I melted the entire pile of ingots into one large ingot. Here is a picture next to my 1894. The bullet next to it is a 105 howitzer.---6

The pile has not got a whole lot smaller, mostly because I've been crazy...crazy...crazy the last few years on semi auto WW2 guns and AR's using jacketed bullets and......beings I'm gettin' older, I have been using my 600 pound stash of Linotype which is in the basement.

That shirt that is in the 4 year old picture? In the picture it was the first time I ever wore it and it's the last time I ever saw it again...until last month when I aired out my six sleeping bags and this thing came tumbling out.--------6

I found that just after I retired I was sleeping ten hours a day or so too. This went on for I don't know, six months? A while anyway.
