Did I Ever Mention ‘I Love Trout Fishing’ ;-))

Post by cshold »

Left work at 3:00 this afternoon and went straight to my local trout stream.
About an hour and a half later I had my limit of 5. 8)
Picture got a little blurred, I got some salmon egg oil on the camera phone lens. :|

Is it really kosher to use spinning gear for trout? :P I always thought "real" fishermen used fly gear! (I always use spinning gear myself... but have been told I was "uncouth")! :o :D :D :D

In the small streams & creeks I fish, those guys that show up
with $100’s worth of fly rods & gear are 9 times out of 10 called
'entertainment'. :D

I learned long ago, a good quality ultra light rig with 2lb. test and
a jar of plain old school salmon eggs = fun & taking home a trout or two. 8)

salmon egg oil turns the photo into fish porn. 8)

Image

I fished a couple of days with Frank Smethurst, filming an episode of TU On the Rise in my tailwater.
He taught me about Otter's Milking Eggs - when you absolutely, positively have to catch a fish right now.
(also a way to legally fish eggs in "no bait" water)

Image
that's the egg, slid up my tippet and bump stopped on the spit shot (I use a needle to run the tippet through the egg - the fish is on the bare hook fished below the egg. If you look at the bottom center of the photo, you can see the size 22 midge that landed a 27" rainbow that same day.

Real fishermen don't care what anybody uses or how they dress, as long they're legal, respect the stream and etiquette, and enjoy the fishing.

An essay that very nicely puts the whole snob or elitist thing in perspective is in John Gierach's book, Dances with Trout, the essay titled Bugs, about the "Gortex hatch" on Armstrong's spring creek.

No, you don't have to use a fly rod, but like driving a stick shift car or making a fire without matches, it's nice to know how......

If all you know how to do is drown worms, and that makes you happy, I'm cool with that, but ya really are missing out on something wonderful if ya never have learned HOW to fly fish ( I do it either way, depending on my mood and how hard the wind is blowing). Just my view.

Nice "five" for a coupe hours work. ;)

I have the blessing of living right beside a stocked trout stream and fish both fly and spinning for them. Kinda makes me mad that they, alot of times, prefer Powerbait over a properly tied and presented dry or streamer though.

Those trout snobs would have a coronary if they saw how it's done at Lake Taneycomo in Branson, Mo. Boats full of guys, using spinning gear and powerbait, catching hatchery raised trout. It is the only way I have ever done it.
Fly casting is one of those things I have always wanted to learn, yet have never actually done. One day I will. There is a shop I drive by on occasion that offers lessons, I always seem to find an excuse not to stop in.

I think way too many people get hung up on the mantras of the fly fishing industry. Cast. Instruction. Guide. Fee.
No, it's fishing.
While I've never tried to teach my girls fishing, I did show them how to roll cast (which you can only demonstrate on the water), let them learn how to do it and to catch fish, then I offer pointers when, on their own, they make a back-cast and try to shoot line.
Fly fishing is pretty much cane pole fishing with the added advantage of getting your line out a little farther and drifting it with the current. Most fish are caught at your feet.

It ain't rocket surgery or brain science.

A half fast cast can be learned in an hour, and perfected in a season.

I used to think it was hard to cast a fly line, which kept me away from it for decades. I learned, then my son read "A River Runs Through It" and he learned too. Fly fishing for bass with a 5 wt rig out of a kayak is some good fun....

One of the most peaceful sights I have seen in years was a gal in her 20s standing waist deep in the waters of the Gulf Of Mexico fly casting. Fishing alone, she cast for about two hours straight, caught and released a few fish, then got in her car and went on her way. Better'n therapy for sure.

Amen. And, while my Dad ain't here to take me fishing anymore... I still remember those times we did.

Him waking me at 4am, dragging me outta bed, down to the truck and help hitch the boat... eatin' cold, soggy breakfast sandwichess grandma would bag up for us... baiting hooks for hours in the hot sun, askin' "where's your sunscreen kid, you're gonna burn! Hey, set that hook, you're gonna lose that fish!" Etc., etc., etc.! But... I'd do it again in a hearbeat if I could!

My favorite fishin' nowadays, is done with a rubber sinker... and a six-pak!
