Names...

Post by Hobie »

I love genealogical research. Sometimes what you find is quite sad, or touching but sometimes it is just funny. I just ran into a lady named "Anna May Day". I don't know what her parents were thinking but that just tickled my funny bone.

I bet you have run into such, what is it that makes parents saddle their kids with such names?
Sincerely,

Hobie

My grandpa's aunt was named Myrte. His great grandmother's name was America...yes, you read right, America. I think there were just a lot more "unusual" names back in those times. My great grandmother's name was Zora. She had siblings named Modini, Cora, Nora, Ozete, and some others I can't remember off the top of my head. People, especially backwoods country folk from the south, just had a unique way of living and thinking. I think a lot of that culture went into the names of the kids.

Some names I came across during my caerer as a Federal civil servant:
William Shake Speare
Olive Green
Maureen Green
Jade Green
Buck Wheat (occupation listed as “farmer”)
Royal Elk
True Blue
China Clipper
Peter Lust
Jack D. Ripper
The most important aspect of this signature line is that you don't realize it doesn't say anything significant until you are just about done reading it & then it is too late to stop reading it....

One of our Loss Prevention people was named Richard Yaws. Yaws is a disease caused by a type of bacteria called a spirochete. Dick Yaws is a rather funny name for someone around the medical professions. At a pharmacy I worked at a long time ago, there was a girl named Rickettsia. Rickettsia is the name of a type of bacterial infection, and the mother saw the name in a Doctor's office and thought it would make a great name for a child.

I do land title research, and see quite a few interesting names. One of my all time favorites is Floretta Fay Fisher. That was her married name and I wonder if one of her requirements for a husband was that his name started with "F".

Although the names weren't strange, I had an uncle who had a strange method of naming his kids. With his first wife he had children with names like "Joe Smith Jr., Bill, Mary, Lisa, etc" They had several kids which she took after they divorced. He married a second wife and used the exact same names. So he had two "Joe Smith Jr's, Bill's, Mary's, Lisa's, etc". It was pretty sad yet weird that he seemed to be trying to replace the children he lost.

There was a girl worked in our office at Pratt & Whitney back in the early 80's whose name was Melody Ring. I thought the name unusual, but it had a pretty sound to it.

I don't imagine there was that term to describe some folks when he was born. I last saw him in 1978.
He died a few years later when I was away in the Army.

I really miss him.

I wish his brother My uncle Lew would have me his "stash"
He bought a house and land seaside in Del Mar CA after he got back from WWII, was not expensive then.

Had a co-worker once named RG, as in RG Lutz. No initials there and it wasn't short for something - his first name was simply two letters.

When he told me this I rolled my eyes and said something sensitive like, "You gotta be kidding me." Needless to say we did not become fast friends...
