The cost of bullets

Post by Mike D. »

YIKES!! 300 and 350 grain .458 jacketed bullets are nearly $1.00 each at most available sources. I'm gonna have to use my stock very carefully.

It is only money! (or so I tell the wife... and not so successfully I might add! )

All the more reason to cast your own. I buy maybe 2 or 3 boxes of jacteded bullets a year. Cast for most every firearm I own with the exception of some seldom used rifles, 338 Mag, 375 H&H etc.

Have you considered moving up to the 405 grain Remington JSPs? Most sources still list them at under $20.00 per 100.

I've thought of it Ji, but my not being a fan of such heavy bullets has so far kept me from buying some of those. I'm gonna have to rethink that.

another vote for casting.I cast for all my rifles but the 223's.ditto for my handguns.
the ranch dog 350 gr lfngc(45/70) shoots tighter groups than that jacketed stuff anyways   .

I normally use the Barnes Originals, but have not ever shot HPs because of their destructive tendencies. I do have a large supply of 300 gr Laser Cast to use, too.

I prob'ly will never get into casting bullets, either. It just doesn't interest me enough to take the time to do it. Store bought lead bullets are still cheap enough for me.

Mike, I practice with the bulk rem 300 and hunt with Nosler or Speer 300 gr. The Rem load shoots within 2 inches at 100 and I leave it sighted for the Noslers.

Bullets heck.. I can't even get lead. I had a never ending source of soft lead as well as reclaimed shot. One dried up and the skyrocketing prices killed off the free shot.

I cast up a bunch of bullets tonight. At 650grs a piece... the pot don't stay full long.

I have been stashing lead now for years.I knew there might come a day...
about 10 years back I ran into a guy that bought a building that was a old print shop and picked up 400 lb's of linotype for .25 a lb

the boxes I got off a guy in GA that was giving up on reloading a few years back.
it says
MFG barrys then 111 / 45/70.
hope this helps
