.357 Load Question for Scott T.

Post by 3t- »

Scott,

If I remember correctly you posted on the other site that you were loading some .357 heavy cast over Alliant 2400. I loaded some 180grn over 13 grains of 2400 today and it was very accurate. (only had a 20 yard indoor range to work with) The Lilgun was accurate also but the 2400 shot 8 rounds into one hole with no vertical range, I mean they were not 1/4 of a bullet dia. above the horizontal. Kind of spooky accurate.

I don't have a crony, what were you seeing for velocity and spreads?
regards

I'm not Scott, but 13 grains of 2400 under the Cast Performance 180 WFN GC seated to 1.59" gives me 1500 fps and 1570 at 1.80" OAL. Firm crimp, WSPM primers.
Kind regards,
Tycer

15gr of 2400 behind a 180gr cast bullet and a small pistol magnum primer gave me 1756fps in a 16 inch barrel.

Might be a little hot in your rifle, but it was fine in mine.

By comparison 158gr Federal red box gets 1803fps in my 16 inch barrel. They shoot to about the same place, which is a happy coincidence.

15 grains of 2400 sticks the cases in both my S&W 19s. Takes a firm push on the ejector to clear them.
Kind regards,

Scott, Tycer,

Thanks for the info. I think these 180 cast are going to be a lot of fun in this little trapper.

I would definitely work up from the low side. Particularly if that ammo could ever end up in a pistol. I would not want anybody to get hurt.

Excuse me for jumping into this thread....

...but I have a question...would anyone recommend that Federal round for hunting deer sized game? In the PA woods specifically, with the Marlin 1894 CS.

Just wondering -- because my 1894CS really likes this round, and my SP101 2.25" gets 1200+ fps from it as well.

Thanks in advance,

Thomas

PS Just in case it reads this way, I am not asking about hunting with the SP101. :)

Scott brings up a good point for pistol cartridges, are they OK in pistols?

I would not hesitate to shoot a deer with that 158gr Federal load, but I would pick a shot either from the front or side. I would not try to go through a full somach with it.

My SP101 prefers the Federal Premium 180gr SJHP and (of course) my 92 shoots it like a house afire too.

If I couldn't use/didn't have the 180gr Hard Cast, I'd use the 180s SJHP before the 158 SJSP in EITHER gun.
