Pick up the original 3:10 (if you haven't seen it) with Glenn Ford - very different from the new one, and in some ways better.
I'm stumped on the newer western question.

I very much enjoyed "Lonesome Dove" as well as its prequil "Dead Man's Walk." "Open Range" is another "modern" western I'd recommend viewing.

I'd also suggest getting a hold of the "The Quick and the Dead" movie starring Sam Elliott (as opposed to the one starring Sharon Stone, which is a weird kind of semi-feminist western which has a decent storyline but is nothing to write home about).

I'll be watching "The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford" tonight. I'll post a review later.

I picked up "Dances with Wolves" on the sale rack, it was enjoyable to watch, but it's got your basic liberal message. Nature and Indians good, white man bad. It's more of a personal story than a real western.

On one trip I picked up "Posse" which is about a group of black men in the West after the Spanish-American War. Great selection of leverguns to look at. Overall a good action movie. One thing that threw me, one of the actors speaks in Ebonics instead of whatever they used back then.

These ain't exactly new unless you are under 60 or so then they will be new to you. Use the search bar to find Gunsmoke, with William Conrad. Have Gun Will travel, with John Dahner. Death Valley Days, Luke Slaughter of Tombstone, and A Gentleman of the Fronteer to name a few.
These are the old radio shows not tv or movies.
They also have the surviving tapes of The Shadow and the original broadcast of War of the Worlds with Orson Wells.

I hope that link came through live. Vista doesn't do them quite the same. sometimes it does sometimes it don't.

I have always like DuVall, any part he ever played. IUn the lonesome Dove, no one could have out done him. But in Open Range, it is his crowning achievement. I love that movie, and it is worth watching many times over a period of time. Why can't we get more westerns?, isn't Selleck still up to it?

If you like twisted stuff watch "Ravenous"

Set in the 1880's I think. A group of soldiers turn to cannibalism.

I enjoyed it but I like the wierd stuff.

+1 on Open Range....destined to be a classic if not already. Though hard to find, I really enjoyed Ride with the Devil with Toby McGuire. There is a new one coming up called "The Hayfield" which looks really good too but not sure when it will be released.

BROKEN TRAIL - starring Robert Duvall

LAST STAND AT SABER RIVER - Starring Tom Sellick

QUIGLEY DOWNUNDER - Starring Tom Sellick

YOU KNOW MY NAME _ Starring Sam Elliot
(not really a western, more about prohibition times, but well worth watching just the same)

Well, it's more of a 'modern' western but be sure to see "No Country For Old Men", it's worth the visit...

I've got it! Though long and sometimes a bit canned, Sam Elliot does make it a decent movie and fun to watch. I've never NOT liked one of his movies. Conager is another one of the greats.

Duvall is also good in 'Geronimo' but he's not the star. I think it is a John Milius production, and he was praised in one of the gun magazines as one of the more accurate directors gun-wise.

+1 on Big Jake. Among the top 3 John Wayne films ever.

Monte Walsh with Tom Selleck is well done, and beautiful scenery.
