What levergun calibers do you have?

Post by O.S.O.K. »

We are in the process of preparing our house to show to sell.

As part of this, I had to hide my gun collection - was in the shop and that's a selling point of the property, so I want to be able to show it w/o letting anyone see my gun collection.

So I had all of my leverguns spread out on the table while I was detaching the gun safe that I keep them in - which made me look at what I've got - and I just thought I'd start this thread about caliber choices...

I've got the following:

45-70
45 Colt
44 Mag
405 Win
356 Win
357 Mag
30-40 Krag
30-30 AI
30-30 Win
.22LR

Looks like I have a gap! Need a 25-20 or maybe a 25-35...

I don't see a 30-06 either but the 30-40 Krag is probably close enough functionwise - One of those in a Winchester 95 took the B&C largest rack elk some years ago west of Crested Butte, Colorado.

Pretty much anything on 4 legs in North America. The mod 99 would take care of anything, but it is nice to have the 356 as backup. :D :D

Sadly, my collection is somewhat lacking...

Marlin 336 30-30.
Rossi 92 45 Colt
Browning 95 30-40 Krag

I want a Marlin 39A .22 rimfire, a 45-70 of some sorts, and a Savage 99 in .250 or .300.

45 Colt, model 92 Winchester
348 Winchester, Browning model 71 Carbine
45-70 Govt., Browning model 1886 SRC
30-30, Winchester model 64

Future NEEDS: Browning BLR, 358 Winchester, Savage model 99, 250 Savage, Browning B-92, 357 magnum and a REAL Winchester model 1886 SRC. This last is when I sell most of my guns to afford it. 10-15,000 for a good one, I expect.

Sometimes with maturity and experience, one gets to the point of discovering the 'essence' of a particular thing. Perhaps the 'essence' of levergun is attained with a .22 LR and one centerfire, or at most a 'pointy' rifle chambering, and a 'pistol' carbine chambering.

I'm not there yet - I can't seem to settle on what the mystical 'essence' of leverguns is - I try this and that and blame any imperfections on the cartridge rather than the shooter, but in the end, I think many of us settle down to a relative paucity of firearms - the best of the best, so to speak.

OK - I give - what is a ".375 Hoosier" - is it something you are required to own if you live in Indiana...? If so, I'd hate to be in violation...

.30-30 (last count was back up to an even 30! Although 4 don't have barrels yet, so that may change)
.38Spl/.357Mag (2 - 1 on loan to a friend)
.375 Win
.45 Colt (4)
.45-70

Surprisingly enough, the wish list only includes 3 calibers not mentioned. And while 2 of 'em could be gained with Win 94 barrels, I'd still prefer both in a single shot!

Haves:
30-30; Winchester 94 Trapper, Winchester 94 Classic, Marlin 336C, Mossberg 472
32 W Sp; Marlin 336 SC (thanks Dad)
35 Rem; Marlin 336C
375 Win; Winchester Big Bore XTR (also shoot ALOT of 38-55 from this rifle)
444 Marlin; Marlin 444P Outfitter (yes it is ported, no it doesn't bother me)

Hads:
30-30; Marlin 336CS (x2, both traded)
22 LR; Browning BL22, now residing with my nephew.

Wants:
308 Win; Either Browning BLR or Savage 99
45-70; Marlin Cowboy

Oh, and a real 38-55 Model 94 Winchester, preferably with a 24" barrel.

I would also like to have a Model 94 in 7-30 Waters. I have a box of Hornady 7mm Flat Point bullets that I have been saving specifically (for years) for this rifle.

Oh, I forget the .348 W.C.F. Model 71 Winchester. Mea culpa. I didn't say .22 LR, either. Seems the Model '97 Marlin slipped my feeble mind, too. I haven't seen it in over a year, so...

OK - I give - what is a ".375 Hoosier" - is it something you are required to own if you live in Indiana...? If so, I'd hate to be in violation...
These two are wildcats that I designed to meet Indiana deer hunting regulations. both are base on the .444 Marlin case,
one is 1.61" case length & the other is 1.8" case length in anticipation of the regulations being changed for the longer case.
If you can invision a Rem. BR case they look like it, just longer and a larger projectile. This is how I kill the winter to fight
cabin fever. Playing in the shop keeps my other half from killing me. LOL
