shooting prarie dogs with Winchester 1886

Post by win40-82 »

A friend of mine is out visiting me in N.E. Colorado and we've been doing a little prarie dog shooting. I shoot mostly wilcat calibers in 17 and 20 caliber. One afternoon we go kind of bored so started trying to harvest the little critters with our model 1886 rifles in 40-65 and 40-82. I managed to get 2 with my 40-65 and one with my 40-82. The kill with the 40-82 was 130 yards the other 2 were about 80 yards. Hard targets. My friend (picture with the white hat) got all of his with a 40-65. It took a few more rounds than normal but what a hoot

AWESOME! Looks like good fun for the two of you :D

I guess that makes me seem a little less 'odd' when I take my '86 in 45-70 out grouse hunting!

THAT, I enjoyed! Thank you. :D Nice pics and most especially, excellent choices in firearms. There's just somethin' 'bout an '86. Tell us, what are your loads? A little detailing on the rifles won't hurt much either. :D ----------Sixgun

Excellent rifles and it sounds like a great time. Good practice for later deer/elk/antelope work. You won't need to grind those PD's to convert them to sausage!! :)

The 45-90 manf. 1889, the 40-65 in 1891 and the 40-82 was made in 1887 and has a single set trigger and a 28inch barrel. All are shooting home cast bullets. Bullets of the 40-65 and the 40-82 are cast using an original Winchester 40-65 mold. For the 45-90 I use either a 325 or 350 grain gas check mold. Also added this little critter with a Model 1884 Springfield 45-70 trapdoor at 107 yards.

Win4082---Thanks! Thats really cool using an original mould. Those original moulds get hot, don't they? I wrapped leather around a few that I have. Are you using smokeless or black?---------Sixgun

Blooded my Mod 71 last year. After shooting and cleaning up, a groundhog wandered out into the garden while I was talking to my brother in law. The only thing handy was a 348 Winchester. It didn't bounce off.Lots of fun.

They do get a little warm but I what I do is make 5 with one mold, set it aside, then go to another mold and make 5. This seems to keep the temps right where I like them. I've gone to smokeless powder, 5744.

Wish there was something like that around here I could practice at... I'm impressed with your shooting, and don't really have anything to add, except every time I read the title to this topic the phrase "red mist" comes to mind. :P :P

Been home since Monday and nary a coyote... seems that someone told them I was comin' home and they skedaddled!
