Turnbull saa or USFA saa?

Post by rodeo kid »

Would you rather have a Turnbull open range or a USFA saa from Longhunter? Here are my choices: Turnbull offering his open range saa Blued, colorcased frame and 1 piece walnut grips. Has dual cyls in .44spec and .44-40. Longhunter's USFA would be blue, case colors and two piece premium walnut grips with my name engraved on the backstrap. It would be in .44-40 and include an action job. The Turnbull revolver is $1650 and the Longhunter $1417 with the options cited. What do you think? God Bless.

Kid,

"Assuming" I had sufficient disposable income to float such a purchase I would probably choose the Turnbull gun. In reality I don't know anything about either gun, but I have heard many more positive reports about Turnbull's work than I have Longhunter.

I find that the standard USFA fare is fine, I see no value in either after-market company's addendums, but that's just me.

RangeRider7, just curious.............are you saying the Colt SA revolver's quality control now make it the standard that everything else is to be measured by? Or at least, these others mentioned?, jd45

The Colt SAA is the only one that will grow in value rather than decline. IMHO

RK,
I'll have to say Colt as well.
For a little more than 1650 you can get the real thing.

I'm out of touch on the current quality of Colt SAA's, but if comparable I'd buy the Colt. And, you can find them for a lot less than $1,650.00 with just a little looking. But, if it were the USFA or the Turnbull as the only options I'd take the Turnbull.

I don't remember where I read or heard this (maybe the shot show) but it's my understanding, Turnbull uses unfinished USFA guns and then completes them. I do know he did USFA's CC and may still do.

As for Colt Quality, they had some serious problems in the late 80's early 90's. But, the current guns that have come through here are as good as any colt ever made.

Folks, I never mentioned Colt in the Question. For a reason, I have a Colt 51/2in nickel, walnut stocks in .44-40. Purchased unfired from Cabela's for $1350. I have never understood why on a forum when a comparison question is asked between 2 firearms people jump in with a third or fourth firearm. If I did not have an opinion between the two I just would not respond, but that's just me. I also have a USFA Rodeo II in .38spec and a Ruger new vaquero in .357, both from Longhunter. In my opinion, while the Colt shoots fine, the Ruger and the USFA have way better triggers, with fit and finish about equal on the Colt and Ruger. The USFA is the best made of the 3 by far. I want a blue and case color next, hence the comparison. Does anyone actually have a Turnbull and USFA in case colors? Thanks and God Bless.

I have found it to be very hard to answer a question as asked when my opinions lean in another direction.

When I posted above I started to answer that if I had that much money I'd buy a Colt SAA. My Holy Grail. But I reconsidered, thought about it and answered the question as asked.
It's not hard if you read and respond accordingly. Is it????
Wait a minute .... I just contradicted myself .... arrrrghhh

Fairly common internet banter, dont take it personally. :) I have an opinion about those two, --- the opinion i have is that for $1650, I would shop for a Colt as well. :)

Well, my take is to answer the question asked but...

The USFA QUALITY is apparently no less than the aftermarket seller's guns BUT they purport to add value through some minor modifications, none of which I see $400-600+ in value. For the price I'd buy a Colt as well since a COLT is indeed more likely to appreciate or at least maintain value. I own 3 USFA SAs because the QUALITY is/was equal to the Colts I'd seen but at a better price. One can also get wrapped around the minor dimensional differences if one cares to.

However your question REALLY is that you have others but are interested in these because you don't have one. If that's the choice, I'd take the Turnbull because Turnbull guns have higher value than whats-his-name.
Sincerely,

Hobie

Nothing but Rugers in my safe at this time but if I was not remodeling the kitchen I'd be gettin one of these in 44 special.

Not that it is any better or worse cuz I wouldn't know anyway, but because nobody else makes this configuration in a production gun and I've been wanting this exact set up for a long time :D
