deload/reload

Post by pokey »

while at a gun show, i found some 45 colt ammo a fella had for sale.
i've been looking for brass so i stopped to talk with him a bit. he said
his father [now deceased] was a gunsmith and had reloaded this years ago.
well i finally talked enough, that he gave me a deal i could not refuse.
so these came home with me.

being the trusting kinda guy i am, i'm breaking these loads down.
i will use the components again, but for the powder. so in the box
are several different loads the seller could not tell me about.
two types of proj.

some of the jacketed stuff had 13+ grns of what looks like unique in them.
pretty stout, glad i did not pull that trigger. some had really shiny, black,
irregular powder i'm not familiar with. but the odd thing was most of the lead
swc loads had wax discs pressed in between powder and bullet.

i have never seen it done this way before, have you?
they were loaded with 6 grns of a familiar looking powder,
but i can't recall what it is. light gray, almost translucent round flakes.

it's all gone now, ready to reroll .
gotta get busy. :D

As you may or may not know, it is quite common for blackpowder cartridges to have a cardboard wad or a wafer of wax or lube between the powder and base of the bullet. Its purpose is to protect the bullet base from melting or eroding from the powder gases.

If those lead bullets are dead soft swaged lead, perhaps Papa wanted to protect the bases from the propellant gases.

The red wax discs or wads appear to be a product called Soft Checks. I have used them to protect soft bullets from powder heat, with mixed results. Ignor the powder if it isn't certain, it makes good fertilizer. ATB

i'd say ignore the powder even if you have a good idea what it might be. using an uncertain powder is a false economy at best.

As Cliff said, it makes good fertilizer, or nifty fireworks.

You did right in pulling them down and reusing the components. That's what I would have done too.

However ... I would have kept the powder till July 4th then set it out in the back yard in a pan and lit it off. Oh what a lotta fun!!

I'll bet the 13 grain load was Alcan 8. It would be close to a factory load velocity wise.
