Grandsons shoot all of my ammo

Post by win40-82 »

Two of my grandsons came and spent the week with my wife and I. The older boy at 20, in the Navy sweat shirt is leaving for boot camp the 25th of May. The other one is 19 and a music major at Chadron State College in Neb and is wearing the CSC sweat shirt. The weather was real crappy but we managed to get out and shoot a few prairie dogs one day and on the other we spent the day shooting my lever guns and an old trapdoor. I brought three original Winchester 1886's, a 40-65, 40-82 and a 45-90. I also brought my Browing carbine 1886 in 45-70 and an old Model 1884 Springfield trapdoor. I don't know exactly how long we were out shooting but between the two of them them managed to go through 250 rounds of ammo, which is a little over 10 punds of lead fired into the hill side, shooting at pop cans and milk jugs. Their favoite was whatever they were holding at the moment but both were suprized how accurate they were, paticularly the trapdoor. Not only did the manage to hit the pop cans while they were standing up, more than a few were hit in the ends while lying flat.

Now you need to teach them how to reload and you're in business.

Win 40-82: Yeah, grandsons can be 'spensive.. but I fugure it's a great investment in the future of shooting sports.. I have three grandsons , one old enough to hunt deer .. the other two are chomping at the bit.. I had the youngest one get the barrel on his single shot Cricket actually hot, going thru my stash of bulk 22 ammo.. on one of the swinging steel gong targets quarter inch plate, he pounded one of 'em into a cup shape..One of my grandaughters got her first whitetail this year.. Life is Great!! Les

How about a couple of nice .22's? :D Or even a .357 Mag levergun that can shoot 38 specials.... and indeed - they will probably appreciate being shown how to reload ;)

Oh, and did I say good for you granpa? No? Well good for you! We need more grandad's like you Sir.

Most fun you've had in a while, huh? I always enjoy shooting with my kids.

Just make sure that the amount of AMMO they are allowed to use correlates with their GRADES, and you'll have established priorities and good study habits that will assure they can earn enough money down the road to buy lots of their own ammo, and ammo for their grandkids...

There are not very many young men their age that have had such a great privilege as to shoot that many rounds with great classic rifles such as those! I'm sure some very good memories were made that they will be able to mention to some of their grandchildren when the subject of the old Winchesters comes up. Sounds like you are a first class grandfather. I plan to do the same with my grandchildren when they get old enough. Right now, my oldest grandchild is less than one year old, so I have a bit to wait.

Good for you, win40-82. Very few people, let alone ones that age, get to shoot original '86's. Memories for sure.

SO are YOU bragging or complaining? :P Either way your life is good If'n you have a 22 MAG I have 2-3 thousand rounds I'd be more than happy to bring down and LET/WATCH them shoot up 8)
30/30 Winchester: Not accurate enough fer varmints, barely adequate for small deer; BUT In a 10" to 14" barrelled pistol; is good for moose/elk to 200 yards; ground squirrels to 300 metres

Thanks for all of the kind comments. These 2 young men are real good people, both seem to have their heads screwed on right. I really had no complaints about how much ammo they shot, I enjoyed every moment. However, feeding them was another item. Man can they ever pack it away. We have 9 grand kids, 6 boys and 3 girls. All love to shoot and I would be sad if they didn't use up lots of ammo when they are here. Here is the youngest with a couple of prairie dog she had just shot with a 17HMR, her favorite rifle is my Cooper MachIV.

To hell with the cost, I think you will find this to be a memory that will remain with them long after you are gone.
